Help me Overclock my system, never did it before

Thread Starter
I've built a few different PC's for myself but have never overclocked one of them before because I've never done it and have been afraid of screwing something up. I was told on the Tom's Harware site that I should come here because you guys like to help people like me learn how to overclock my system.

My system is this:

Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H Rev 1.0 Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 Regor 3.0 GHZ Socket AM3 65W CPU
Corsair XMS2 2GB 240 Pin DDR2 800 Ram
MSI R5770-PM2D1g Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 Video Card
Antec BP550 Plus 550W Power Supply
Win XP Pro SP3

I'm going to be doing a Dual boot winth Win Xp Sp3 and Win 7 ultimate as soon as I get the Software in.

I'm also going to be upgrading my Ram to:
http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/Sh...px?Submit=view

Or something similar within the next couple of months.

I was thinking of upgrading my processor to a Phenom II but have been told I'd be better off overclocking my current system. If there is a step by step guide somewhere I can read to help me thru this then that would be good, if not then I have no idea how to go about overclocking my system?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

Should be able to overclock quite well, although your GPU HD 5770 could be slightly bottlenecked by your processor, but not by much. Good idea of overclocking. You need an aftermarket cooler however, since Athlons have been known to get quite hot when overclocking.

What would be a good inexpensive cooler for my CPU? I'm currently running the one that came with it. Think this would be a good one to buy?

As it turns out I had a brain cramp on the Ram issue and instead fo buying all new ram I decided to buy two more sticks of the same ram. Either way it will bring me to 4GB of ram with the same speed as well. Plus I trust Corsair ram more than Patriot.

Here's a thread on air cooling, including a list of the top HSFs.

You may have to spend a bit more than that one you posted for a quality HSF. Just from what I've seen.

I'm running the Scythe Katana 3 right now and it does a decent job of cooling. However, when you really push it I don't believe that it can keep up. I don't usually push things that hard so for now the Scythe works well. I may look to upgrade in the future.

However, if you are only running a dual core you may be fine with the Katana 3. It may not clear tall ram however.

Just for reference I'm idling at 29C right now. It's almost 80 degrees (Farenheit) in here right now. I have seen temps approaching 60C while using Prime95.

Excuse my ignorance here but:

When I looked up the CPU I have on newegg it showed a 92mm fan? Does that mean that's the size of "THAT" fan or It's the size fan I "HAVE TO" buy for my cpu? I saw that and thought it meant I had to buy that size fan for my CPU? If I'm wrong please educate me, because it's obvious I need it, lol.

Thanks again

No you can go with any cooler that fits your MB socket. Since the Hyper 212 Plus has a larger fan than the Katana 3 it does more CFM at lower fan speeds.
