What AT&T smartphone? - Page 6

Dang, that's unfortunate. I'd really like to play with one before I bought. Not being able to is a real knock for something so expensive/needing to last so long.

And my local craigslist wouldn't likely have one, and if it did, it'd be most likely ebay+ prices. People here suck at making deals

That sum it up? I know less about the Nexus, and android in General, as I've never used one. Looking at that list, it's a very tough choice.
The banding in the gallery was a problem in the gallery.apk, I'm not 100% if Google has fixed it in their official rom, but it's definitely fixed in the custom roms. If it's not fixed in the official rom yet, it'll be fixed in the official 2.2 rom.

Just throwing this out there, but there's no reason not to root and run a custom rom, also. There's some great updates in the custom roms, and there are quite a few useful root-only apps. Droidwall lets you blacklist/whitelist apps from 3G or WiFi, so if you get a limited data plan it can come in handy to cut down on data use. Titanium Backup lets you batch backup your apps, and one-click install them all again, which is great for doing a complete wipe and switching to a different rom. It can also keep multiple versions of an app, so if you update and find out the newest version changed a feature you loved, you can just roll back. Metamorph lets you replace graphics in just about anything, so you can do a complete custom skin, or use one of the many popular skins.

That's some great info, thanks. Will I lose warranty if I root it, or is Google cool about that?

For any hardware issues such as a broken power button or dust under the screen, they'll cover you. However, if your speaker blows out or you fry your processor, they will not cover you.

Basically, anything that can be broken by having superuser permissions, they won't cover.

I see, so really, shouldn't be an issue, especially if I wait a few weeks to make sure there is nothing defective, and I'd actually have to break it myself?

My sister is looking at smart phones on AT&T right now. I currently have iPhone 3G and am in the process of trying to get Apples website to coperate and let me preorder the iPhone 4. But basically for good smart phones on AT&T your options are limited...

You have Blackberrys (wife has and loves here Curve 8100)
Palm pre plus
palm pixi plus
moto backflip - currently the only Android phone
iPhone

AT&T is getting the HTC Aria or something like that within the next week which is another Android phone, but specs place it more in line with last years great Android phones. 600Mhz cpu...

The HTC Aria is on last years hardware, similar hardware to the HTC Hero. However AT&T is soon releasing the HTC Desire which should be on standard with the Incredible and Evo

the Samsung Captivate is coming soon, it's a mirror image of the i9000 Galaxy S, which is going to lead the pack in Android phones. 1ghz Hummingbird, Cortex A8 with a better GPU than in the A4 SoC. I'm waiting for it. Supposedly it's the i897 Captivate. Now, assuming the leaks/rumors are true, it's not going to be crippled by At&t.

it'll be crippled by AT&T. I don't see why they would change their policy for one phone when they wouldn't even uncripple the iPhone... we've waited a year for teathering and now plan to charge just to teather w/o any extra data... what a joke! Just like they crippled the iPhone's ability to send MMS for 6months. I highly doubt AT&T will allow any uncrippled Android phone anytime soon.

Interesting, I'll see if I can find more info on this Desire. Any word on subsidies or release dates (approximate?)

Why would it be crippled by AT&T? I don't see anything crippled about the iPhone, save maybe the closed system. What would they do to cripple it? Captive sounds good, I'll look for info on that too.
