Might push my Xmas build closer to... August.

Originally this was going to be a ~$2000 post-Xmas build, but I miss having a desktop (RIP my old one...). I'm thinking if I drop the price closer to $1400 at most, I can build it later this summer or in September, so I'm tweaking my Newegg build. Here's what I have in mind:

Motherboard: Asus P7P55D-E Pro ($180)
PSU: Silverstone Decathalon DA650 ($85)
CPU: Core i5 750 ($200)
GPU: XFX HD5850 ($280)
RAM: 4GB G-Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 ($110)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB ($100)
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus ($30)
Cathodes: four of them ($27)
Case: Lian Li PC-K62 ($90)
Total: approximately $1,070.

Any thoughts suggestions or tomatoes? Anything I'm missing? Few more $$$ I can save? It's my first build so I'm rather worried (and also very excited ).

I say switch down to 1156, and get yourself a better gpu.

You could get a cheaper case like the CM 690 II also to cut costs down.

With Intel your going to want ddr3 1600 ram if you plan on overclocking which brings me to your heatsink. I would get the CM hyper 212+ instead. It can be found for under $30 shipped and performs better than the Freezer 7.

Edit: That link just sends you to newegg to log in.

Someone is selling a used EVGA GTX 470 right now. I agree with the case as well. Also, if you want to stick with the Socket 1366 set up, obtain an i7 920 instead and push that further.

Yeah, just sold my 8800 GT so I'll need the GPU as well. I'll try to pick up a 470 if I see one for sale.
For the case, just browsed the for sale forum here and there's some good cases for low prices, so probably going to go with that to save some quid (still kinda like the HAF, else a Raven).

Okay so both of you mentioned avoiding the i7 930 and going either with a 920 or a socket 1156. So maybe I should go with an i5 750 and just overclock the bejeezus out of it? Going to make a few changes to the build and then add links to the original post, just noticed that you guys can't go through to my build even though I made it public.

Thanks for the suggestions and gimme a sec I'll make them official.

I'd stick with the 1366 socket if you consider SLI in the future just because it has more PCI lanes.

P.S. your OP says P6T but it links to a P7P55D (excellent mobo)

Thanks kennh, but I actually just decided a couple hours ago that I'm going to go for a fairly budget build. As it stands, with some overclocks, I should be able to get through two years rather easily and then I can build a new system with a new mobo, CPU, RAM, uber-GPU, etc. For now, this'll do (translated: this should run Crysis 2 ).

I really feel like there's something huge I'm forgetting though. Am I right or can I spend the rest of my budget on a new mouse, monitor, and a nice keyboard? lol

I would make the following changes:

HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $69.99

Case - I disagree with the case choice, it starts out at $150 and ends up being $114 if you get the rebate. For the price you could be getting a lot better. Do you absolutely need a full tower? There are a lot of very decent mid-towers which could help you save up to 50 bucks without a rebate.

You should definitely change the CPU cooler. You don't want a low profile cooler for a full/mid tower regardless of whether you are overclocking or not.

Okay, changed the HDD. Thanks, hadn't seen that one, great buy.

Switched back to the Hyper 212+, hadn't realized it supports 1156 socket as well.

As for the case, I wanted to go full tower because it's my first build so I figured it would be easier to manage the cables. I'm also used to having full towers, so I think I'll probably keep it. That being said, I'm open to any mid-towers that have good cable management (and aren't hideous). Going to go see if I can find any.

Thanks for the suggestions.

There are tons of cases which can provide you decent airflow, good cable management, and decent spacing without breaking the wallet.

Antec:
900 - mid
902 - mid
1200 - full
HAF 922 - mid
HAF 932 - full
P18X series - mid

CM:
690 + variants - mid
Cosmos - full
Scout - mid

Lian-Li:
PC-K62 - mid
PC-7FNW - mid

There are more, but I'm feeling a bit lazy Just wanted to give you an idea of how many alternatives you have available

I like the PC-K62, added it in. Thanks mate.

And the build is now below $1,100, very happy.
