Questions about Overclocking and 1:1 FSB:DRAM

Hi I'm new to the forums and overclocking in general and i have a few questions. i've been trying to learn as much as i can about OC'ing and been having alot of fun right now even with the BSOD's and failed OC's that cause in reboots and frozen screens.

Last night i finally got 3.9ghz to be stable, i'm not crazy at the temps at full load but at idle they seem to be at 44 degrees which is only slightly higher than when it was at 3.6ghz. i'm going to test it tonight doing my normal gaming and see how high they get, i should be aiming to keep it under 55 degrees right?

i have a question on when people say "adjust NB voltage" do they mean NB VID or just NB? my bios has voltage for both. right now to get my 3.9 i have both set at 1.2 volts or close to that. i think i'm only supposed to mess with the vid but wasn't sure, if so should i set the NB voltag back to auto?

Last question is on ram. i have corsair dominator 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 2x2gb ram. i currently have it at 1333 7-7-7-20, because i've read that AMD works better at 1333mhz. is that true? i've been reading people say that you want you're FSBRAM ratio to be 1:1, but at the same time every thing i read about overclocking AMD's is that you just want to move the multiplier and leave the FSB alone. In order to get 1:1 ratio i obviously need to mess with the FSB correct? i had a formula that someone posted on either this forum or another on figuring out your RAM mhz knowing you're fsb and ratio. so for me i have 200mhz FSB and 3:10 ratio:

200/3*10 = 666
666.6 * 2 = 1333 which is what my ram is.

so knowing that would it mean that i need to set my FSB to 666 to get a 1:1 ratio? i'm thinking since it's dual channel that really i just need to get it to 333 for FSB? the reason i think this is because i read a few posts that said you need to get your fsb to 400mhz to equal 800mhz or 1600mhz ram.

thanks for any help you can provide

Jon

TL;DR version: running at 55c during normal loads is ok?
do i just NB vid voltage or just NB voltage when OC'ing?
to get 1333 RAM 1:1 fsb:dram do i need my FSB to be 333 or 666?
is 1:1 a big increase compared to my 3:10?

55C during normal loads is fine. I upped my NB VID voltage when I changed the NB frequency and it made it stable.

EDIT. I may have misunderstood what you said. If you are using a stock cooler, and by that mean "normal", then check your load temps when you've overclocked. They're going to be much high at 3.9.

EDIT 2. Welcome to OCN

with the stock cooler and an oc'ed cpu your load temps are going to be a lot higher than 55c. there is no way you will get a 1:1 fsb:ram ratio, so don't try it. get a good cooler to replace your stock cooler.

these are good coolers

Thanks for the tips. i will get a cooler when i want to seriously OC i think. Right now i'm just trying to get what i can out of stock mainly because the wife is on me for spending so much on a pc so i don't want to add more too it so quickly and i'm not very motivated to take out my MOBO to put on a cooler. I'm going to save those links though for the future

my normal load i mean using my pc everyday. when i did the stress test it was at 65 degrees, but i'll never have my pc load at 100%...i don't think. tonight i'm playing on playing my normal 3hrs of gaming at a time and monitoring my temps. so by normal i mean if my temps while playing games, which would be the biggest workout my cpu would get, doesn't exceed 55 degrees am i fine staying at 3.9?

thanks for the 1:1 heads up, i was all gun-ho to go home and start messing with that
if i'm at 1333mhz 7-7-7-20 timings is there anything i can do to get it faster? RAM seems far more a mystery to me than CPU OC'ing.

so upping both my NB voltage and NB vid voltage is fine?

OC'ing is like a flipping drug right now, i don't need my PC to anything more than stock but it's so much fun to try and push that i can't stop

Thanks again for the quick replies.

Jon
