470 and an ACTS or Cm II Advanced case or Intel SSD.

5870 is better than the 470 on power, heat and performance at higher resolutions, but not price. The 470 wins at tessellation, DX11 and Metro 2033. If a game includes those, most reviews show it pulling ahead, but the 5870 again surpasses the 470 at higher resolutions and/or DX9. Either card is a good choice, but the 470 is cheaper.

Oh my god. Don't get a gtx470. The 5850 is overall better for less. I would go with the 5870, it performs very well for the money.

Remember that the ati cards are months old now. So if you really want the price/performance of ati you should wait for the 6xxx series out late this year/Earl next year. Otherwise nvidia has the newest tech right now

Offtopic: I'm prouf of you for getting something to help cure cancer.

On topic: I would get a 5870 myself just for the heat/power (FANBOY!). Plus, if you get a ref 5870, you could really have fun OC'ing it. Maybe try the OCN sell section for a used one and save some money?

Are you ok?

A 5850 loses to a GTX 470 most of the time. It does not win most of the time. You might want to check out a few reviews. There are some good reasons why the 5850 is cheaper.

?? yeah ugh maybe when it first came out without drivers on a bottlenecked Pentium D or something, but for the most part the gtx 470 beats the 5850.

are you sure you didn't mean the 5870 or something?

The 480 is a great video card. The 5870 is a better deal though. (IMO)

Get the 5870. Even a 5850 would work great for you. 5870 will give you a couple of more months before you have to update your video card though.
