Had my first LN2 session today. A friend and I rented a 20L dewar and set out on the mission to bench AM3 and X58.
My initial plan was to run benchmarks on the Phenom II 955 at 6GHz then switch over to X58 to run 3D. My hope started to fade when I managed to boot fine at 6GHz once and then I started getting all sorts of errors. I ended up loosing one hour troubleshooting and then giving up and going X58. The most likely cause is condensation, even though the board was covered in vaseline where there wasn't kneadable eraser.
I got my UD3R and i7 920 out to finally place them under LN2. I started off benching his HD5770 with the CPU at 4.8GHz. Vantage wouldn't open. Instead of wasting more time reinstalling that I just didn't run it at all.
Seeing the LN2 coming to an end I figured it would be better to run 2D benchmarks since I would barely have enough to optimize 3D benchmarks on the 9800GX2. The GTX 480 would take just as long.
Starting on 2D I got the CPU to the same 4.8GHz I got on DICE and tried to go up. The CPU would not take 233MHz BCLK. After some trying, NoGuru suggested I raise the PCIE (was at 105MHz 'till then). By raising the PCIE to 107MHz and later to 109MHz I was able to achieve higher clocks, but still not my max, for sure. This CPU has more to offer.
Here are the session's results:CPU-Z
Phenom II 955 at 6000.64MHz3DMark05
- 32004 Marks on AMD HD57703DMark06
- 20277 Marks on AMD HD5770Aquamark
- 316093 Marks on AMD HD5770CPU-Z
Core i7 920 at 5002.76MHzPifast
- 17.18s on Core i7 920SuperPi 1M
- 8.174s on Core i7 920wPrime 1024M
- 2m 37.125s on Core i7 920
This CPU had CBB at -105ºC and I didn't find its CB (tried up to -180ºC
In attached pics I have the insulation for the AMD rig (forgot to take one for the X58, but it was pretty much the same. I had kneadable eraser on the normal spots and Vaseline wherever the eraser couldn't reach. Last picture is one of how messy the room was while the session was going on. Reason I couldn't get a camera on a tripod to Live Stream the action.
Overall I am disappoint with my skills under LN2 since I think I could've done much better, but glad I got the experience of this first session.Edited by nolonger - 10/16/10 at 6:54pm
