Whats better?

1 stick of 1gb PC3200 ram or 2 sticks of 512mb PC3200 ram?

Or doesnt it make one bit of difference?

Cheers

First, to make the comparaison, make sure that for the exception of the different memory sizes, the 2x512Mb and 1GB have the exact same specs: timings/cas latency/speed.......
If they are same, if your motherboard supports Dual Channel, then your DDRAM will operate faster on dual channel so the 2x512MB might be your choice.
BUT it depends two on the number of DDR slots you have on your motherboard, if you have only 2, keep in mind that you will always have only 1GB of DDRAM except if you replace the 512MB sticks by 1GB sticks, so then it's just a matter of space and how much memory do you want on your system.

Well, it all really depends if you plan to upgrade later on. 2 sticks of 512 = dual channel, which yields a considerable increase in performance.

Then there's the 1 gig stick. In most cases it's cheaper. If you're short on money at the moment, that's a reason to get it. Also, if you plan to upgrade to 2 gigs. You can always buy the second stick, and later on you'll have 2gb dual channel. Note that this is what I did, and I plan to get my second stick soon enough.

I have 3 slots, PC3200 supports 2 banks, PC2700 supports 4 banks. Prefer PC3200 obviously.
