gonna take forever to freeze tho.

I don't think the freezing water will crush the rad. The water has other space to expand to other than the space occupied by the radiator.

That was my reasoning as well. Update: Added a permanent maker mark on the levele of the antifreeze in the tubes. this way if the level drops or rises i will have some indication of damage to the tubing. BRAINBLAST FTW!

Ice is a great insulator, I do not think this will work very well at all.
If you were to repeat using anti-feeze in the tub, I would expect much better results!
Enthalpy of fusion of h20 is high, but I am not convinced that this will help you out because of the insulative properties...
Give it a shot, let's see!

Enthalpy of transformation of water from solid to water is not very large...
Do explain further....I am very interested....Being that this is an experiment, I am always open to other methods and variables. The more the better.

Also, The hope is that the ice immediately surrounding the tubes and fins will melt and the ice will keep that water nice and cold.

This. Now if the tub was sealed and filled to the top with nowhere for the ice expand to then yes the tubes would be crushed...maybe. He does have fluid in the rad and I am not sure of the thickness of the 1/4" copper tubing and what kinda of pressures it can handle. But I would llike to see how this goes. SUB'D!!

This would actually increase the impact of the ice. Since it will absorb more thermal energy while maintaining phase, because phase change is an isothermal process keeping everything cold even after absorbing large amount of Joules
