Next Stop --> Max. $130 AGP Card

I have been hearing good reviews about x1600pro and 6600gt and they are right for my budget. i am leaning towards a x1600pro now because of sm3, avivo plus the support for next gen dvd's. i want a card that will last me for about 12-18 months and be able to play some new games on my 19" lcd. i also want to work with photoshop and dual monitor. What do you think i should get form those tow or any other card within that limit from newegg or tigerdirect

No video card on the market supports next gen DVDs. Look into it deeper and you'll find that you've been completely misled, almost to the point of it being fraudulent. The gpu is, but the rest of the video card isn't. We've all been completely hoodwinked.

If by nextgen DVD you mean HD-DVD I think those things are suported by these cards. I don't see why they wouldn't be, since the fact that the HD-DVD run or not is a soft issue. The thing was that both ATI and nVidia claimed they have support for hardware-accelerated HD-DVD playback, and for example the x1600 was supposed to consume less resources when playing a HD-DVD than the older cards. In fact it was proven it's not quite like this as they consume preety much the same amount of resources.
Back to the point thow, I'd go for the x1600pro, as the technology seems to be quite adequate to future games. The games that are today will run at acceptable levels on the x1600pro, but in 3Dmark 2006 it is very close evan to 6800, so it seems to me that future games that use sm3.0/HDR will run better on it than on the 6600GT.
I would sugest also a 6800XT wich is aprox in the same price range and it seems to be unlockable and OCable plus it has a 256bit mem interface.

I don't think so, because I'm buying one for me just as we speak.
Take a look, it's a french site, but you'll get the picture. I bet in the US they are cheaper and you have more to choose from

Yep, I see. I've searched and it seems they kinda disapeared from the stores. Anyway, if you manage to find some, I've heard that the one made by ASUS unlocks at least to 12/5 (wich is 6800GS pipe configuration).
Good luck, but if you don't find any I'd go for the 1600.
