Is extra $ worth it for the Athlon 64 3700+? - Page 3

He knows that he's looking at the clawhammer core. And from what i've seen, the DTR mobile clawhammers OC better than their desktop counterparts, and are much cheaper.

All L2 arguments aside. The NewCastle core just doesn't OC that well. Go with the ClawHammer. I am in the exact same position and am going to be purchasing a 3700+ ClawHammer as it is an all around better core. Add the extra L2 in there and it makes it all the more worth it.

EDIT: If you want to get a DTR, make sure your mobo will support it. Most do. The DTRs for whatever reason, do OC better. Might be because they are lidless, I don't know.

Very good point about the compatibility, i forgot to mention that.

edit: And with that budget, you should also look at turions, those are some of the best overclockers for skt 754.

That extra 512kb of cache won't really make a big difference, says AmandTech.

says ME!!! the 1 meg cache makes no difference, check some bench's. the differences is very little, well within a 10% overclock.

The last time i checked, a 10% increase in system performance is a significant gain. I hope you guys aren't expecting the difference to equivalent to say a p4 compared to a celeron.... That being said, the original thread maker should look into Turions, those cores, newarks (which are hard to find), and then DTR mobile clawhammers are the overclocking monsters of skt 754 that don't need to sacrifice L2 cache to overclock well....

Here's a nice gaming benchmark showing the venice (512kb) L2 cache needing an extra 200mhz of stock core speed to match the clawhammer. Notice their pentium ratings (3000+) are equivalent, which as i said before, is a pretty accurate way to compare amd processors. It's not a 1ghz difference, but to say 200mhz is not much is definitely not agreeable by me.

Please keep posts to the OP's Qs and not develop this into a war of A vs I. Doing so will see you in the corner for a while...!

EDIT: If you comment on this post an automatic corner will be found for you
