Zalman 9500 temps still high. Did I do anything wrong?

Thread Starter
Ok here's the deal, I just installed a Zalman 9500LED on my 3.0 478 prescott along with a new northbridge fan and 2 120mm case fans, but my cpu temp is still the same as it was with the stock heat sink. I used AS5, but i don't understand why the temp hasn't gone down. I followed the instuctions in the faqs for using thermal paste. Should I take it off and try to do it again?
What do you guys think?

Are you testing load temp or idle temp? It's quite common for idle temp to stay the same, but load temp should be decreased considerably.

Its the idle temp. It just seems strange that others are idleing at somewhere in the mid to upper 30's and I'm still running hot at idle

What are your numbers? What are you using to get your temps?

Like others have mentioned, idle temp means little to nothing unless ambient temps are given. With that said, keep in mind that you have about the hottest running cpu there is. The Prescott core is famous for it's heat generation.

What numbers are you looking for? System is 35 PWM 38 cpu 48 at idle not sure how high they get under load. What sould i use to get a good load on the CPU to get the load temp? I use the ABIT EQ, and I also used everest. Room temp is around 70 F

48 at idle!
I would try again...
The heatsink and processor mating surfaces should be flat and clean, almost polished.
Use just enough Artic Silver to barely cover the surfaces.
Make sure the heatsink is tight and doesn't wobble.
Have the fan exhaust towards the rear case fan.

ok i ran cpu burn-in for 30min with error checking on then again with error checking off. The cpu temp touched 56 a few times but mostly stayed around 55.x Room temp is around 75 F. System temp stayed around 33 or
34, and the pwm jumped around a little bit from like 48-53 or 54. Do you still think i should reapply AS5 and remount it?

It's worth try. , your temps are very high.
Your idle is like my load.
I have the same cooler and I am overclocked.
If a "Perfect" remount doesn't work, I would bet a defective cooler...

Defective?? you really think so? Hmmm. I'll try a remount later on and give it a shot. If that doesn't work i guess I'll RMA it back to newegg. Thanks guys.
