Sitting on a shelf you say! Can you afford the room for a flat ATX desktop?
Just a thought

For the OS I use windows XP, contrary to popular opinion it is very stable, just turn off all the eye candy to save memory. But I just use it because I have unlimited copies (school copy).

DO NOT CONTACT COMCAST if you contact them and ask about that they will tell you that you must upgrade to a business account. I use Comcast cable Internet myself, nothing is blocked with the exception of WinMX

The Duke brought up a good point. What he is talking about is basically a tower turned on its side; only it is made to be like that. Cheesy illustration:

Dude i run a server at home and im round ur age too so i might add my 2 dollars worth(be that AU..). My server is a Celeron 2.4 with 1 gig RAM and it runs fine with Win Server 03. What i would really reccommend for if u want cheap is to get a cheap 64-bit CPU like Athlon 64 3000+ or one of the really cheap Dual Core intel like the 805... Basically if u get a cheap 64-bit CPU like i said(maybe even a sempron) then u can install Fedora Core 4 64-bit edition and that will mean ur server will have the edge over a powerful 32-bit system when under load. But also as the others said, dont skimp out on the RAM i would say a minumum of 1gb

i had a vry nice p4 2.6 socket 478 with hyper threading but i used it as a dedicated lan gaming server and i was able to host 2 games at once. if you want a decent board for a server which is easy to overclock i would get an abit ai7 motherboard or any other socket 478 board. i was able to get it stablly overclocked to 3.0 easily from 2.6.

if you r willing to spend a decent amount of money for a vry nice amd board i would get the motherboard i have. it is a socket 939 which can run an athlon64 64fx and x2 and its sli capable. a board like mine will run u 224.

if you want a really nice 64 bit os get suse linux 10.0 which is 64 bit capable. also the board mentioned above has 64 bit driver support. you can have up to 4 gb of ddr400 (pc3200) ram. and it is sli capable so if you ever want to sell it in the future you can sell it for a nice price

I would *REALLY* use fedora core if I were you.

Yes, registered RAM is what you gotta use, but I'm not sure of the price...

What is your exact price range? I may be able to put something together if you'd like. You know you can just find some good decent parts and run a nice computer as a server. Like everyone is saying, as well as myself, do not slack on RAM.

$500-600.

Yes, I would use a Linux distro, not sure which yet, I've been out of the Linux loop for quite some time.

I did actually put a build together that would cost $550. It had 2gigs of value Geil, a venice 3000+, a 250gb SATA2, and a mini-atx in an aspire x-qpack(the cube).

I'm interested to see what you'd put together. The cheaper, the better(even less that $500.) We're just a bunch of kids looking for something to do this summer.

The setup you currently have picked is plenty for what you intend to do with it, perhaps more. I think some of these others that are posting are not reading the entire thread and realizing that you are not going for a full-blown business server.
