9800gt 73C idle?

Thread Starter
Okay so my 8800gs burnt up and i got a 9800gt under warranty. One thing I noticed is that this thing gets LOUD when playing games. I was playing overlord 2 on max for about 2 hours and when I quit I opened speedfan to check temps. The card was at 79C about 2 mins after playing, and now 30 mins later it is idling at 73C. Does anyone know of a good heatsink that will definately fit this card? I saw a post where a guy tried a duorb and it didnt fit. Case temps read 34.6 at idle and 41.7 when full on gaming. Case is an aeroccol m40, power supply is a silent pro that is sucking air off of the graphics card and spitting it out the back.

first of all get gpu-z http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/
this is more accurate then speed fan for your temps.

then download furmark http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ this is good for testing your cards stability.

can you do a case mod and install a fan, blowing onto your card?
after a quick google search your idle temps should be 45-50 C
and load temps should be 75-80 C

you defo have a heat issue.
take side off case and see if temps drop when running furmark.
also have you a front intake fan to blow cold air into case?

ps. if temps go above 85-90C in furmark, stop it

okay well the link for gpuz you gave me is a malicious program that crashed my anti-virus and firefox thanks dude........ anyway I downloaded rivatuner and it shows the same gpu temps. Strange thing is the gpu fan is blowing softly and when I oppened the case the card felt like it was about room temp when I start playing games the fan does go supersonic mode like it should though. Oh and btw it wont let me delete gpuz now, says I dont have the authority *** dude

Is it a single slot 9800GT?

If it is, you're mostly out of luck. It is normal for the GPU to reach those temps in single slot heatsinks, and there really is nothing you can do about it, unless you try applying new and more conductive thermal paste, or switching to a new cooler.

The Accelero S1 rev 2 brought my XFX 9600GT from 80C idle 100C+ load to 35C idle and 48C load. (with a spare 120mm fan attached, which brought temps down about ~10C to the temps you see now).

It is a single slot yes, I think I may just get that cooler. I did notice though that xfx has cheaped out and started putting aluminum heatsinks on the cards instead of copper that probably would have been good for like 5 degrees alone. Ive also noticed that the cards fan is gpu load driven instead of temp driven.

Ok so I got around to pulling off the stock heatsink today and look at what I found. and Notice how I took a picture of the gpu in the light so that all the reflecting spots are the ones with no thermal paste on them at all. This is really a horrible job on xfx's part, also should there be any thermal compound on the ram? And what thermal compound do you recommend I use to redo this ****?

I have a single slot 9800GT too (from PNY) and my cooler is even worse, but I idle at 60C at 35% fan, and max temp in Crysis is about 71C with 100% fan (sounds like a vacuum in my case at 100%), so something is wrong with yours.
