7800GT Thermal pads/paste

Thread Starter
OK so I bought a couple of Jaton 7800GTs. Read a couple reviews that they sometimes had the thermal paste not applied properly or left off. So I took the cooler off and am going re apply everything. So the for CPU of the card its easy (artic silver 5 paste). Only thing i'm confused about is the ram chips had cotton loooking pads w/ thermal paste (thicker than CPU pads...i think). When I apply the artic silver 5 to them they don't touch the heatsinks (close but not a solid touch). To touch I would have to apply a thick good blob on them. I've looked around for the pads but w/ not luck. Anyone have any suggestions of what to use or where I can buy what I need if i shouldn't just put a big good blob on each. Lastly anyone know if there is any decent upgrades for the 7800GTs cooling wise? The stock cooling looks pretty good to me and seemed to work well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks -Kyle

Try the Zalman VF-700CU. Its about $30 canadian. IF the ram doesn't have contact with the sink, it won't get any benefits. With the 700CU, my idle dropped 5C on the 7800GT and my new 7800GTX. Even more important, my GTX load temps went from 72C to 56C with the Zalman. 16C drop is huge especially if you are going to OC the card.

Edit: Make sure you pick up the CU and not the ALCU version. The all copper model improves temps at load by 5C (I know I tried both). Its only a couple of dollars difference. Also, if you have a windowed case, get the LED versions (again only $4 difference). They look really sharp.

You can get NV SIlencers for $25 at Sidewinder Computers wiht $5 Priority, so for $60 you can get a really good cooling units.

At first I wasn't too impressed but after a week and the thermal paste setting in , my Temps are much much lower and it exhausts all the hot air outside the computer which is a plus especially if you're running SLI

You need to make sure that you have 1 slot between your PCI-E slots or the NV Silencers wont work

Fill out your System Specs so we know what board you have

The arctic cooling silencers and the zlaman vf700 are both great coolers, but they both have their own drawbacks.

For the silencer, you need to have at least neutral air pressure in your case, if not positive. This is because the fan is very weak and any negative air pressure will bring the airflow in the cooler to a halt or even reverse it! So if you have equal or better intake fans than exhaust, get this option.

For the VF700, heat is exhausted into the case, so, just make sure you have a good number of fans anywhere. The placement doesn't really matter as long as you get the heat out. The only drawback is the heat usually ends up rising up to the cpu and heating that up too.

So it's up to you.
