Memtest stable but not Windows????

Thread Starter
I have just bought some new 2x1GB Ballistix tracer RAM and I have being trying out its OC ability. I managed to get the RAM to 275MHz (3-3-3-8-2T) at 2.7V and it is totally error free in Memtest. However when I go into Windows it is not even stable at anything above 255MHz! Why is this?

Maybe it’s not the mem that’s causing the stability issues. thats a pretty hefty OC so its possible you are reaching the limit you setup can go...

Mmm...I was thinking that as well, but I have tested out my CPU OC, and I know that it is totally Prime stable at 2.86GHz. I was thinking that maybe it could be my motherboard???

If you haven't already, try the 2T Command Rate to see if this gives you more stability.

In adition to the previous statments.
Try a few things...
Upping the mem controler voltage and bumping up the vdimm a bit more.
Could also be the PS can't handle the load.

Maybe it's the chipset that can't handle 275? Have you gone that high before with other RAM? It can even be the processor that's being pushed too hard. What speed would it be at with an FSB of 275?

#4 - I am at 2T at the mo and that doesnt seem to help really
#5 - My PSU is a Tagan U22 480W model, and that could be the source of the problem. It seems quite a good model but my Vcore doesnt seem that accurate or steady.
#6 - I am not sure how high to raise the Vdimm. My RAM is rated at 2.8V but with the recent crucial ballistix probs I dont know whether to do 2.8V.
#7 - I have the multiplier at x10 with 275 and that wont work. Even with my old RAM, which was rated at DDR500 I was not able to go above 250 in windows really, same with this RAM. I dont know what is causing this problem? Is it the mobo?

It sounds like the motherboard is the limiting factor in your overclock. Try upping the chipset voltage and see if it works. If your BIOS is anything like mine (Award), that setting will be in the same window as where you adjust the FSB and CPU multiplier and all that good stuff (I think the window is called Jumperless Configuration for Asus boards).

Thanks for the help. I dont think the A8N has a chipset voltage, but that is exactly what I think the problem is. In jumperless config there are 2 voltage settings Vcore and Vdimm, but nothing else. Do you think this is the problem?
