First Build, i7 920

Thread Starter
This will be my first build and my first powerful desktop that I will get some nice use out of.

I'll be using it 75/25 for gaming and number crunching with Matlab.

I'd like to keep everything as close to $1,500 as possible while still getting a setup that will last me a long time with the possibility of upgrading in the future.

The only parts I already own are a keyboard, Saitek Eclipse II, and mouse, Logitech G5. Everything else has to be purchased new/used.

Newegg was having a sale on the 932+PSU and that combo was cheaper than just a 922+Corsair 650W PSU which I was planning to use.

I plan on OC'in the 920 to 3.33/66 for prolonged use, and maybe try higher just to get some initial benchmarks.

Looking around the sale forums I saw a i7 920 being sold for $180, $109.99 savings. Doing this will allow me to upgrade to a HD 5870.

My other possible upgrade would be to get a 22" monitor with 1680x1050 resolution, I believe a 5850 would be able to work nicely with that resolution for a while before needing a second 5850 put in CF since I don't need to max out all my games, but I feel the money would be better spent on the 5870.

Edit: I will be building this by the end of the month, hopefully ordering everything by this Friday.

Edit2: My build so far
Case+PSU: HAF 932 + CM Silent Pro M600 $139.99
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R $209.99
CPU: i7 920 $180, used
RAM: G.Skill Pi 6GB (3x2GB) $179.99
GFX: 5870 $400
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB $79.99
DVD Drive: Sony Optiarc $19.99
Wireless Card: Azio 802.11b/g/n 19.99
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium $99.99
Monitor: Asus VH424H 1900x1080 $179.99 - $30 MIR
CPU Cooler + Paste: Venomous X w/Fans + Shin Etsu X23 $65

Total: ~$1,510 after MIR

Final build on post #19.

I highly suggest you pick up a used i7 920 D0 from the buy and sell section and use the savings towards a bigger monitor.

Thanks for the advice.

I'll be replacing the HDD/Burner/Thermal paste for the ones WannaBeOCer recommended.

I don't live near a microcenter so I can't take advantage of that 930 deal .

I think I'll stick to the TT 120 Extreme though, partly for the looks. If I was planning on staying closer to 4 GHz though I think I would easily spend the $10-20 on the Megahalems + Fan.

I just looked up the difference between C0 and D0 stepping, I saw a 920 C0 for $180. I will look for a D0 but if I can't find one then I'll just take the C0.

Originally I was going to purchase an H50 cooler but I decided to stick to just air cooling for now. In my next major upgrade I'm pretty sure I'll be using some water cooling though.

The 1900x1080 resolution on a monitor is too big for me, I need to use glasses when looking at one most of the time, not to mention it will make me upgrade my GPU sooner.

I looked at newegg/fry's/BB and I saw this Asus 22" 1680x1050 monitor for $158.99 after shipping.

Edit: I can also get that monitor from Amazon.com with free shipping so it'll be $146.99.

I would actually go back to the Corsair 650W over the CM 600. It's an overall PSU. Just because it says 600W doesnt mean it will actually push out that many watts and also the quality of the power being pushed out will also be effected. I would stick to seasonic, corsair, and antec power supplies even if it's a little more expensive. Also I'm selling my Puget Hydro CL1 which is pretty much the exact same thing as a corsair H50. Here is the link if you want to check it out:

Thanks for the advice, I read up on reviews on the CM M600 and people have been able to get up to 650W out of that PSU and be stable.

When I get a second graphic card I will probably end up buying a 750W PSU so I can be sure nothing's going to go wrong anyway.

For the CPU fan I think I'm going to get a Venomous X after doing some reading on the Megahalems/Venomous X/TT 120E. I can get it from Amazon.com for 69.99 with free shipping.

Now I just need a fan, I'll look around tomorrow for a nice one that won't be too loud or that I can use with a fan controller to keep it quiet when I'm not doing big OC's.

If anyone knows of a good one that fits my needs then I'd be glad to get some recommendations.
