Retrieving lost/deleted data?

I have no idea where to begin with this. All I know is "Would you like to delete this file?" Yes, I would.

Yea, that's about it. I'd like to know the ways I could retrieve deleted data, and the effects old, "deleted" data may have on the hard drive if it's still recoverable. How I could permanently get rid of it, as well.

I'll look for a FAQ right now, and if I find one I'll just edit this post. to N/A lol

When it comes to undeleting your files, there's some good programs out there that can "help" you do this. One thing to note is that undeleting is not a flawless process...in fact, if there is any drive activity after you accidently delete a file, then recovery might not be possible.

For completely destroying a file to not be recoverable, like your sensitive documents and such, those programs are called "Shredders." There's programs that shread only files, and programs that shread files AND free space on your hard drive.

Here's some programs for you to try.

Undelete program:

Shredders:
http://www.handybits.com/shredder.htm Freeware File Shredder
http://www.download.com/BCWipe/3000-...-10418590.html Shareware Military/DOD specification shredder

If you happen to destroy a drive that contains information that you MUST recover, then there are expensive services available that will disassemble your HDD and grab as much off the disk as they can. That's a pricy service though, ranging in prices from a couple hundred bucks to thousands of dollars depending on the damage to the drive.

Hope this gets you started in the right direction!

Thanks a lot!

So there's nothing much else to it other than programs or specialists to do the job for you? I couldn't use DOS or something like that to recover files in any way?
