Is this RAM good quality or should i be going for something a bit better

DDR2 2048MB (2X1024Mb,2G Kit) PC4300 DDR2 RAM Kingmax

It may be...but it won't run in your amd system. It's ddr2 and amd will only run ddr.

why doesn't it work? is it to do with dimensions or something like that?

DDR2 is different than DDR. plus physically they are incompatable. DDR has 184 pins and DDR2 ueses 240

yea, i always wondered bout that. any suggestions on good brands of DDR for a new system

Personally out of experience, I recommend OCZ.
They usually have the best CAS Timings thus, better speed.
