3 Questions about Ram from a noob

Thread Starter
Hey guys

Here are a couple of questions I have:

1) if I buy ddr2 533 pc 4200 ram, and my cpu and mobo can support ocing of up to 2.66, does that mean then that I will be able to run stable @ 2.66ghz?

2) what would be the different in performance between buying ddr2 533 corsair value ram and ddr2 533 corsair xms?

3) lets suppose now that I wanna go back to ddr2 400 pc 3200, can I do that with ram rated ddr2 533?

Thanks

Well...there is no guarantee that any chip will oc to a certain point, having good ram is never a bad thing..with that board I would think about looking at some OCZ as the DFI boards are known to be picky about what ram you run. And you can always drop ram down to a slower speed at any time without out any problems

1)I don't think you'll be able to specifically buy DDR533, but ram that can o/c that far should mean a stable system if everything else is stable. Don't forget, you can run a divider to slow down your Ram in relation to the HTT speed, so you don't necessarily need Ram that quick.

2)It would depend entirely on the apps that you were running. If you describe what the main uses of the rig are then we can answer that question better. The difference is that the XMS runs on tighter (lower) timings to improve performance.

3)Yes, just return your HTT to 200Mhz or run the appropriate divider.

For instance--I can only run my Corsair ValueRam at 2T 2.5 3 3 7--XMS (secondhand info here) should be able to handle 1T and much tighter timings (I believe 2 2 2 5 are doable)--which will show up in benchamrk scores but more importanttly increase the overall system performance--becoming more noticable when running demanding apps that are RAM intensive.
