x800 or 7800gs?

Thread Starter
crap crap crap crap crap, my car broke down and most of the money i had saved for my new rig had to go to that.I still have $350 left and need some opinions on whether a 7800gs or an ATi x800 all in wonder would be better for me. I haven't overclocked yet, but i guess if I finally overclock my northwood, put some more ram in here (i can get ram for like $10 a stick for corsiar value 1GB) and get a new video card, i might get another year or so out of it so i can save up again. I use my comp for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, playing music and gaming (F.E.A.R, America's Army, CoD2, would like top be able to play oblivion)

thanks alot in advance

I love my AIW x800xt. It's OC'd to 535 core/588 memory. If I hadn't already spent money on the AIW I would have picked up a 7800 just for the simple fact that the performance would be the same or better and it also supports shader model 3.

The 7800GS beats the x850xtpe pretty good, so it's definately a lot better than an x800 AIW. Also, overclocking AIW's is a bad idea as you run the risk of burning out the TV tuner on it.

I'll 2nd that.

Now, in reality, I'm just thininking that the CPU may not be upto the challenge.

There are 28 different kinds of 2.4ghz, which one is the one that you have and it is overclocked?

Go with the 7800GS. Its a win win situation. Its more powerful than the X850XTPE and it has SM 3.0. Not to mention it uses less power too.
Very nice!

i would say x850xtpe is better for benchmarking and overclocking. For some reason ATI does perform better in the 3dmarks in near-identical cards. BUT! The 7800GS is clearly better in games. So you a x800 wont do you no good at all compared to the 7800gs. No doubt, i would get the 7800gs if i wasnt so fond of overclocking and benchmarking. But still it lets me run max @ 1280*1024 on all games i play although thats not so many so go for the 7800gs

and BTW sorry about the car.. must be damn frustrating

Most benchmarking is games, and for the ones that arnt 3dmark05 obviously has something against Nvidia cards.. But with 3Dmark06 the x800 wont do nearly as well. But anyways, no the x800 will still lose in the benchmarks as well.. Or at least all but maybe 2.
