Well, they're even more opposed to the computer being on overnight that during the day because I couldn't be using it then.

I have told them exactly what it is and why I fold, but they don't seem to care. My dad said that he was going to check my computer to see if it's running, and if he finds it folding or has a reasonable suspicion that it's folding then there will be major consequences (probably no computer privileges for at least a month)

I've told them how it's helping Stanford, but their response is "Someone else can do it"
If everyone had this attitude, I don't think much would be done
The noise isn't a problem, it's the 250w+ power draw and the fact that it makes this floor of the house hot.

Well, my rig draws about 50 cents in electricity a day. I've offered to pay them twice that, but they aren't interested in letting me "waste" my money like that--yet they still maintain that I should be allowed to spend my money however I see fit.
I've even offered to write a paper about FAH for my parents to explain why I do it, but they still won't listen to my reasons.

I'd say parents can be funny like that, but there isn't much funny about how they're treating folding. Sorry to lose you MMX, but dont drop off the forums -- we'll still need a cure when you can come back, though we all hope we wont.

Wash the dishes, clean the bathroom, wash your dad's car, do anything which can appease your parents.

If not, get a part time job if you can, and pay off your share of the electric bills.

By showing how passionate you are in something, especially if that something is something meaningful, I DOUBT your parents have any reason to refuse letting you continue doing it.

Off topic: HOWEVER, the last time I told my parents about Folding...they kinda laughed...straight in my face. I don't think they really understand the "helping with cancer research by using my computer" part. :x

This is probably one of the most useful responses I've read on OCN. Go the extra mile and try to find funding somehow to show you aren't just dedicated as long as it is convenient. This type of mentality will definitely help in other areas of your life

Having said that, I've been letting my rigs slack a bit, way too hot these last few days!

And if this makes you feel better in any way, 15K PPD is still helping a LOT. Don't feel so down about it if things don't work out.

As I've said, I've offered to pay them twice what my computer draws in electricity, but they've still said no. I'm really at a loss as to what I can do at this point

Thank you
I just feel bad that of that 15k I'm only going to be doing ~10%, the rest is coming from friends. Sure, it's better than nothing, but I want to feel like I'm doing more

To bad they won't let you pay for part of the electric bill. Parents are parents, you have to listen to them even when they don't make sense.

You will be able to fold again someday.

This is so sad! Everyone I tell about folding always just looks at me funny, when it's so simple and it's helping so much! Some people just aren't for the greater good I suppose (in this sense anyway, I'm sure they are in other ways.). Hopefully you can start folding when you get to college (if you aren't already...)

Maybe you could strike a deal that at least allows you to fold for the fold-a-thons? You could pay them for the bill you used afterwards... maybe it would come to a reasonable compromise that isn't "wasting your money" by your parents standards...

Well MMX looks like you have tried all avenues. Sorry to lose you, you were a big help with me getting started, along with Z. Don't be a stranger, maybe just stick with GPU folding and downclock the i7. Do it when you are home?

Lol I love how parents look at electric bills and always come to the conclusion that computers are the problems . ( I pay for my things so my parents don't complain ) but still PC are only 6% of the total cost on electricity .

A medium Air conditioner take the same wattage than a medium gaming rig at full load ... so shell out 60$ not 150$ cause I doubt the bill cost 1200$ .
