Are you trying to overclock? You need to explain what you are trying to do. Please explain, and then we can tell you. If you need to monitor the temperature of your CPU, download a program called Speed Fan, and check what the sensor 1 reading is. If it is around 35 celsius idle, then you can overclock. If you're at around 42 celsius idle, then it's probably not a good idea. Download a program called CPU-z and run that. If it says that the core is a Palomino, that thing is a BBQ waiting to happen. If it is a thoroughbred (or better yet, a thorughbred rev. B0), it will clock up to around 2.0 GHz before you can't go further. I've only attained 1.8GHz semi-stable, because I have a horrible motherboard.

It depends on the chipset. If you have a VIA KT-600 chipset, 1.75 is about the highest I can get stably. However, the PCI/AGP bus speeds increase by going this high. If you have an nForce2 chipset, you can go to around 2.0 without having to worry about the PCI/AGP because you can lock those with an nForce chipset. With your current temps, I'd say you shouldn't OC. I get around 36C idle and 42C load with the stock cooler and some paste that came with my motherboard. However, my case has a CPU fan duct, which brings cool air directly to my CPU fan. Make sure that you are using at least cheap thermal paste, preferably stuff like Arctic Silver 5, and that your heatsink is properly seated. Also, you can lap your heatsink by gently sanding it with something like 1600 or 2000 grit sandpaper.

The KT-400 is an old chipset, and probably can't do above 1.8GHz max. This would be 144MHz FSB. You're probably unstable because you're just too hot. 1.8GHz doesn't work for me because I have too many devices on my board which causes everything to not work right.

Hmm...that's kind of odd....
I have an Abit KD7A with a KT400A chipset, and am stable at 165 right now. I think though, that my motherboard has locked the fsb of the PCI and AGP slots. There is an option to change a ratio (the only ratio i can apparently change) that has these 3 settings: 5:2:1, 4:2:1, and 3:2:1 (CPU/AGP/PCI). I think these are locked because I have played around with the ratio, and have used the 5:2:1 setting, but the PCI info still seems to be set at 33Mhz. Peraps I have an idiot-proof board? That's a comfort...cus I am an idiot Just still relatively new to the whole overclockin thing, and would like to not accidentally fry something if I can avoid it.
