My first overclock....ever

Thread Starter
My brother and I have been reading up on it, decided to gve it a shot, so he overclocked his and I did mine. I don't know what his is running, but here's mine (and try not ta laugh )
-AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.83) OCd to 2.19 Ghz
FSB now 160/ multi 13.5/ voltage 1.80/ idle temp 38C/ load 42C
-ATI Radeon 9550 256M video card (core 250/ mem 196)
OCd now to core 426.60/ mem 248.40
Only have 1 gig of Kingston 266 pc 2700 (I believe)--2 512 sticks
Ran 3dMark03 before and after:
Before: 2196
After: 3474

Now as far as some of the other things that can be overclocked, I've read your guides and can't seem to find some of the info, or maybe my motherboard call them out differently (Abit KD7A), like the motherboard voltage you have listed as vdd, I think is Nbv on my motherboard. I'm not sure so I decided to not screw it up . Any thoughts on whatever I might be missing? Oh yeah, the cpu is with a Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12, and the vgu is with a Zalman VF700LED. And I have a fairly old case with built in power supply (350 watt) that doesn't jump around alot (fluxuates only about 1-2 watts down when fan throttles up a little). Case has 5 fans in it: one Thermaltake Smart Case fan (80mm) on the side blowing in, some led fan on the top blowing in, one 120mm fan i front of the hard drive blowing in, and 2 Thermaltake Smart Case fans at the back blowing out.

Well All right--you are officially an overclocker now! Not too familiar with that mobo so I will see what others have to say--keep it up!

Now use this: http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download and post a thumbnail for us!

your led fan on the top should be blowing out to release hot air because heat rises so it will help it to escape. you may have negative pressure inside your case right now. the way i do it is intake on the front exhaust on the back and exhaust on the top.

160MHz FSB on a KT-400 ! ****, you're gonna kill every PCI card in your system.

My video card is AGP, and the only PCI slot I have filled is a piece of crap US Robotics modem that I honestly couldn't care less if it burned . And as for the fans, the case I have is aluminum, and has "venting" that they designed. Some kind of louvered top that makes it hard to suck or blow air. I understand about trying to let the heat out the top, but I was kinda thinking about pulling cool air (which naturally flows downwards) in from the top and side, then shooting it out a high speeds from the back. I have played with a few other fan situations and might wind up switching the top one around like was suggested. I also plan on taking my case out for one more mutilation (I already had to cut out "fan shrouds" which were nothing more than holes in the case for airflow. That alone dropped my temps about 7-10C. Need to do it one more time for the top. I also found out from that CPU-Z thing tat my memory isn't even the same speed...bummer :|. I have new sticks i tried using, but they decided to crash my system .

Well it looks like some higher speed RAM in matched pairs would be a good thing. At the FSB you're running some DDR 400 would be about right.

The bad thing is, I HAVE higher speed RAM...it just keeps crashing Windows when I put it in. I have a matched pair of Patriot Extreme Performance PC3200 DDR400 Sticks (2-3-2-6 I believe), and I read the user reviews of the memory and everyone seems to like them alot. Read up on them before I got them, so I think I might have just got bad sticks. Will that memtest86 tell me if one/both are bad, so then maybe I can upgrade to at least one of them? My computer will post, then load into Windows, but then it freezes/hangs/recovers from a serious error, then reboots. It will continue to detect the memory through BIOS and the mem check, try to load Windows, but then it freaks out and reboots again. If the memtest86+ thing will find a good stick out of the two, then maybe I only need to exchange one? (I already sent an email to the tech help at Patriot too, and worse case if they can't help, I'll just go back on Newegg and try to deal with them).
