Is this controller bad for ssd. Im about to go buy an Intel X25-V 40gb ssd. And just found out this southbridge might limit the drive. Should I still do it. I plan on keeping this drive until I upgrade to bulldozer so it will hit its full potential then.

So should I go for it anyways, I'm all stoked to finally get an ssd but found some posts that didn't get me real excited about my weak mobo chipset.

It's not going to prevent your drive from working well; not the best option (that'd be ICH10R/ICH9R) but it's still a decent controller

Regardless of what chipset you have it will still be a massive improvement in real world performance. If you're going to be upgrading with Bulldozer later I wouldn't worry about it. People get too worked up about absolute highest benchmark speed. Enjoy the SSD!

Ok thanks guys, I went ahead and got it. Couldn't restore from an image for some reason so I just did a fresh install of win 7. Getting everything set up now.

Always a good idea to do a fresh install when switching from HDD to SSD, as SSD's align themselves differently, and Windows 7 needs to make a few SSD-specific tweaks.

I'm still kind of lost on what else I need to do to get it set up right. Should I update the firmware? I did not do this. I'm reading the sticky but not sure it all applies.

I have an Intel SSD on ICH7, it doesn't win any benchmarks but it's plenty fast, and with PCIIDE or IntelIDE drivers it supports TRIM

02HD is the latest firmware so you're gold on that...

I imaged my HDD partition onto mine but it was quite tricky (and I had pre-prepared it for 80GB limit)
I had to tweak the BCD+registry to get it to boot... not easy

Not many tweaks are required really, Defragmentation is disabled automatically, and even the HDD partitions on Win7 are correctly aligned so that's not a problem...

one thing I suggest for convenience is moving your user folders, I wrote a little guide: Moving My Documents, My Videos etc, easily

I entered whatever you need into command prompt to see if trim is working and I got the correct response. Sorry cant remember what it was so hopefully I am good there.

Well you're pretty safe with Intel ICH controllers, since they support TRIM on all the available drivers, unless the drive in question is a member of a RAID Array, or if you're using an old version of the Intel driver.
