Well it should last for awhile if nothing messes with the cables. If you can run conduit. If there is a building code in your area it might require it. But I doubt they would ever know. Another thing is animals are crazy. A squirell will chew through a cable just to see what is inside. Landscapers are usually useless people who arent smart enough to think on their own. So they will dig through your cable like it is a tough root. I still think the best option is wireless. If you can get to the roof and set up a wireless repeater there. it should serve the whole neigborhood. I know the antennas cost about 80 bucks. The required amps and stuff would cost you more. I helped setup some a few summers ago at a major resort. The setup was completely mobile, and pretty easy.

Ethernet over Cat5e cable has a max cable length of 100m, so if the guest house is 100m away, you should try something else, as you would most likely go over when all is said and done. I like the idea of wireless, perhaps with a directional antenna, to focus the signal to the guest house. There is one other idea I have, which is to buy a vDSL concentrator. This will take the internet signal you have and inject it into the phone line you have running to the guest house in the form of DSL. Then you would put a DSL modem at each end to convert back into Ethernet.

CAT5 has a signal strenght of up too 100m then you will need to get a repeater to enhance the signal to go any further along that same type of cable

Make sure you buy CAT5e for outside use. Yes there are 2 kinds with different jackets, one UV protected the other not. When using Cat5 the max distance before degrigation is 100M or roughly 320Ft. You can go beyond that but preformance will suffer. Since you are at the max it should work fine but you may not get quite the preformance if say it was 50M.

Another solution is a wireless acess point placed at the back of the house with an outdoor directional antenna aimed at the guest house with the guest house also having a an outside antenna either omni directional or directional. I do not know what the cost the of this over cat5 would be, I am sure more, but you may check it out. The preformance will most likely not be better but it will save you having cable that is airborne and subject to the elements.

Here is a link to direct burial cat5 cable, no conduit needed! Just bury deep enough so as not to hit it with a lawnmower and you are all set:

UTP Cat5 is good for up to 100 metres, after that you'll need to use repeaters to regenerate the signal.

I guess you could always use cable and feed it through some sort of make shift protective insulation and then bury it under your lawn or something...

Instead of pvc, you could burry it inside of a garden hose. At my old house, the people who lived there before us, ran the electricity to the garage in a garden hose. I was helping my ex-#@&%$ plant a tree or something and discovered it in the ground. We never had a problem with it either. And if there are any obstacles you need to go around, the hose is flexible. Just be sure not to hit anything that might allready buried there. (My dad has cut his cable line twice!!LOLOLOLOL!!) Hope to have helped, Shnook.
