What do we know about the Conroe core as of now? Do we know when it is being released?
Congrats on your 4th flame SoadMTGuy! Nicely done.
The Conroe is going to be based on 10-12 cycles, and its new Extreme Edition is going to be named the XE, as opposed to the Pentium EE.

Successor: Conroe

Main article: Intel Next Generation Microarchitecture

Presler will be replaced by Conroe, a desktop implementation of Intel's upcoming Merom core for notebook computers. It will not carry the Pentium D name.

Conroe, which will be a dual-core CPU, is expected to be released in the 4th quarter of 2006 or the 1st quarter of 2007. Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest (the server version of this CPU), will all feature 'next generation micro-architecture', which will combine many characteristics from both Pentium M architecture (P6 architecture, low-power design, etc) and NetBurst. Conroe is expected to have a 65 W TDP, and will also have 2 or 4 MB of L2 shared cache. Conroe will not, however, have HyperThreading. This is due to the 14-stage pipeline, which is much shorter than the Prescott (31 stage pipeline) and Northwood (21 stage) and also a bit wider than Banias. This will also prevent the Conroe from being introduced in high frequencies (e.g. 4 GHz). It is said that the Conroe will provide 2.5GHz

Intel Conroe desktop CPU is expected to be released in July. Conroe is a dual core CPU based around the Merom architecture but optimised for the desktop market by removing some of the power constraints from Merom in order to increase performance. Like Merom, Conroe will feature a 14-stage pipeline and will be a 4-issue core. Conroe will additionally feature virtualization capabilities, LaGrande technology and 64-bit capability in addition to EDB, EIST and iAMT2. Conroe will be available in two forms - with 4MB of shared L2 cache and with 8MB of L2 cache (an 'Extreme Edition' perhaps) and is expected to run at a clock speed of 2.4Ghz or higher.

maybe we need a sticky on Conroe or something, LOL, I have seen about 4 threads on it this week alone.

Sometimes, running a search through the forums is usually the best bet.

Unless you heard 2007 from someone from high up Intel (and we'll need a name ) you can disregard that.

Everything official says Q3, which is July-September. I think April is very optimistic and definatly I would want to see some on where that came from.

I expect we will see a more firm date by the end of March, but don't hold your breath for an April release.

Actually, maybe I should just place Conroe links in my sig

It will own AMD.........IF it does what Intel says it does. Remember, they have not released any benchmarks proving their claims, at least none that I have seen.

And then, who knows what AMD has up it's sleeve.......

Still a little "ping pong" back and forth is expected in the computer performance industry, so if AMD beats Intel again a year after Intel, it should just be Intel's turn again a year later.

Of course, up until recently it wasn't much of a game
