What would you upgrade to?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at two possible upgrade paths.

Either:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Socket 939 1MB Inc Fan
Crucial 2x1GB 184Pin DIMM PC3200 Non-ECC Unbuffered
Asustek A8N SLI Socket 939 nForce 4 SLI PCI-E ATX

Or:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 512KB Inc Fan
Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 Socket 939 nForce 4-4X PCI-E ATX
Crucial 1GB 184pin DIMM PC3200 DDRRAM NP Unbuffered CL3.0

Other Equipment:
Gainward GF 6600GT 256MB PCIE TVO DVI-O
Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 80GB S300 8MB
NEC DVD+-R/RW 16x Dual Layer Black - Drive Only
BenQ 17" Benq FP71G+ 8ms Silver/Blk LCD TFT.

The difference in price is about £120, so do i go for the cheaper option or the slightly more expensive faster specs?

Is there much difference between the 3200+ and 3700+ and also between 1gb and 2gb of ram, I want to play the latest games, like x3, everquest2, age of empires 3 etc.

Cheers.

If you're wanting to play X3 then I would recommend the faster CPU and/or the 2GB ram, and wait for the 1.4 patch to be released.

I have to recommend option 1. The faster cpu with more cache is a definite must. Also the new steppings for the 3700+ (KAB3E) are fantastic for OCing. Also 2 gb of ram certainly is becoming a standard (in fact its my next upgrade as well). For mobo, I've had gigabyte and currently have 2 asus boards and you really can't go wrong with asus. The extra money will make a big difference in performance not to mention being sli ready. You won't need to change your cpu or ram for quite a while and you can add a second 6600GT very cheap at some point at get performance on par with a 7800gt (I have two gigabyte 6600GT's in my second rig, they bench about 5% below a 7800gt I had)

A 2nd 6600GT is almost on par with a 7800GT? That's something i haven;t heard.....hmm...i may have to look into getting that second 6600GT afterall, in lieu of DX10....

will a 300w psw work with a 6600gt agp or a sapphire x1600pro

I had (and still have) 2 6600GT's in sli in my second rig and then replaced them with a 7800GT. I posted all the different benches a couple of months back on the forum. Literally, all the 3dmark and aquamark tests were about 5% different (the 7800gt being higher of the two). I was actually pretty dissapointed when I ran the tests, assuming that there would be a big performance boost. So for anyone with a 6600gt and an sli board, a second 6600gt is an excellent upgrade for less than half the price of a 7800gt. Two 7800gt's on the other hand bench similar to a 7800gtx 512mb. I was able to return them and get full credit which I applied to a 7800gtx (my current card) as I am planning on having twin 7800gtx cards.

regarding the power supply, yes you will need to upgrade.

I got an aerocool 550w for quite cheap off of ebay. The only gripe I have with it is that it doesnt already have the pci-e power molex but a frustrated couple of days waiting for one to be delivered and I have never been ahppier with a psu!!

I'd go for option 1 on your choices, its a bit more futureproof and has a faster/larger cache.

Would any one recommened a PSU from here?
http://computers.listings.ebay.co.uk...istingItemList

Or From here?
http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx...259&PageMode=1

I dont really want to spend much on one, as the option 1 is at the top of my budget.
