Surprisingly effective still for a 9 year old processor aren't they! I only have the one and Windows 10 zips along brilliantly when equipped with an SSD.

Hello guys. I am thinking of purchasing 2x Xeon E5-2670. Do you guys have any recommendations for good motherboards and places to purchase them?

I am planning on using for a home server -- media hub and lots and lots of number crunching. Would ideally like to run one or more GTX 1080/Titan in due time for computation (not gaming) and would like to connect lots of storage one way or another. Lots of DRIMM slots is also preferable as the number crunching might require lots of memory.

Running a xeon in my itx build. Runs unbelievably cool under load. Must be the low volts and ambient is quite cool at the moment.

I recently acquired a Dell R720 from a friend and it has dual E5-2650's. I thought I'd use it as a twitch streaming server or for encoding but I think the dual CPU's has proven difficult for the software to use well. And ffmpeg is actually slower on it with 16cores than on my 3770k. Utilization is a joke unfortunately. I don't blame the machine though.

Outside of that, I have no use for it unfortunately. I was excited thinking I could offload lots of my encoding using it, but Dual sockets is just not what I thought It'd be. Maybe if I had a website that had lots of individual encoding jobs it'd be better, but single large projects don't benefit. Even 4k content runs slow and uses maybe maybe 10% of the system, it's disappointing.

Edit: With more testing, it seems ffmpeg's performance is heavily affected by the input format. Give it a H.264 MP4 file and even a 720p file at veryfast MAYBE managed 65fps with it running on plenty of "cores" but all cores are heavily downclocked on idle. Give it a avi file with UT422 which is much easier to decode and it runs at over 100fps.

I can even encode two 1080p avi files to veryfast/main at the same time and get 45-50fps on each. So once I manage to get a GPU (bidding on a cheap 750 Ti), I can see how OBS performs.
