Cooling advice? - Page 3

After applying AS5 and running for about an hour, idle temps actually WENT UP from what I had before. Since I was busy at the time, I just left it, but about 40 minutes ago I got fed up with it. Took the whole thing apart again, and re-did the whole process (much faster this time, since I knew what I was doing this time around).

When I took off the heatsink, my doubts were confirmed. There wasn't enough of the compound. It was spread in a "radial" pattern, a tiny blob in the middle, and then little "legs" stretching out. The chip was covered maybe 30%. So, I cleaned everything and reapplied AS5. This time I put a good 2-3 times more, and spread it out with a toothpick. I left about a sheet of paper thickness around most of the chip (not reaching the very edges).

Now, idle temps are 39 degrees . Thats a 5 degree drop just because of AS5 - sweet!

Opening up the case door drops the CPU temp down another 2 percent, so it's clear I still need to get that side fan setup, going to do so on the weekend .

that proves the old compound u used was rubbish if uve got a 6c drop.

also you should cover all the top of the cpu in compound at least 1mm thick.
my idle on stock voltage is 14-15c

Good job--I use an old credit card to spread it--and I guess it's a blob about the size of a small green pea. Too little too much too tight too loose--ah just right...you know what I mean?

OK, got a side intake fan now .

Idle temperatures are between 34-36, load temperatures (Prime 95) are 48-50. A good 10 degree drop from when I started this thread .

Good job on that side intake looks sweet.

I would suggest a blowhole on top, a top exhaust really helps (heat rises), dropped mine 2-3 degrees.

Also, I was skeptical about the big typhoon myself, especially since I bought a heatsink a month before I got the Big Typhoon. However, I admit, the Big Typhoon really is the God of CPU air-cooling. My temps dropped 5-8 degrees, and I haven’t even lapped the heatsink yet (went from a Gigabyte G-Power Pro).

AS5 is also very good, and you did right in spreading it out. I put a paper think layer on my CPU with which I use a cut up Safeway club card to spread (I work at Safeway so I have an unlimited supply to those stupid things ) and it drops my temps about 5-7 degrees.

Keep modding, it pays off; even more so when you get a ugly looking $30 or less case and turn it in to a beautiful case that would cost you $130 if you didn’t do the work.
