Any timeframe for Intel's updated 975x?

Thread Starter
As some of you may know, the 975x chipset IS combatible with Conroe CPUs (except the XE which is supposedly running off of a 1333 FSB) however your current 975x chipset based motherboard can NOT accept a Conroe CPU. The reason for this is because Conroe (and Merom) require a new VRM, current 975x motherboards (975XE) do not have this new VRM however "second generation" 975x motherboards (975XBX) will have it as well as support for 1333 CPUs..... my question is this: Does anyone know when Intel plans to introduce this new chipset? Im looking to get an Asus P5WD2-E Premium but if I can wait a few weeks and gain the upgrade path to Conroe, Im definitely doing that. By the way, my current plan is to grab a Pentium D 930 to hold me over until 6/6/06 (expected Conroe launch last I heard) and then hop up to the E6700 Conroe 2.67GHz

D'oh! it seems like I read this article wrong:

http://www.overclockers.com.au/artic...?id=452447&P=2

the Intel 975XBX is the name of their 975x motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121016

However there IS going to be a revision to the 975x with this new VRM revision so my original question still stands, anyone know when this is due out?

I wouldn't be surprised if the current Intel D975XBX is capable of running conroe. I hope so since that's what I have, but actually I probably won't have any reason to upgrade to conroe until there's a quad core.

The quad cores are Kentsfield, so you would technically never have a reason to upgrade to CONROE lol atleast someone finally replied to this thread....by the way Im still looking and getting nothing so my interest is still here, though as you can see I went ahead and bought an Asus P5WD2-W Premium, Im done waiting lol.

I haven't seen anything on a revised 975...........my guess would be not until after Conroe hits shelfs, or maybe right before.

Another question added to this thread (sorry), anyone know or heard anyone talking about being able to modify the early generation 975x boards with the new VRM so they may be able to run Conroe?

Here is the deal. Anandtech said the current 975X will work with Conroe. Intel used a 975X to demostrate Conroe. So that means any issues are BIOS ones, and not hardware. BIOS issues can easily be fixed. I was in the same boat as you. After I saw Intel demostrate the Conroe on the 975X I went ahead and bought one.

I've heard different things from different sites. Though most comments are pre-IDF.

From Anandtech Spring IDF 2006 Conroe Preview

This guy is talking about some revised version of 975X. Are the new 975Xs this revised version?

For the P5WD2-E, Asus just shows:
Support Intel Pentium® Processor Extreme Edition & Intel Pentium® D Processor
Support Intel next generation 65nm CPU

Does that mean Conroe or only Presler?

I'm considering building a rig almost identical to yours, pauldovi, and later upgrading to Conroe. I was going to build an X2 but there's no upgrade path. Hopefully we'll hear something official in the next couple weeks. (I need a new rig soon so I can play Oblivion...)

[OT] pauldovi, how high have you gotten that 920 so far? [/OT]

I'm glad to see that the motherboard I have was used for the test. Not sure I might upgrade if the performance benefit is sufficient but am quite happy as it is. Can't wait to see how overclocked these Conroe's can go.

After Anandtech's Spring IDF 2006 Conroe Preview, I felt confindent that the P5WD2-E Premium would work with the Conroe, as I to plan on upgrading to Conroe in July/Semptember.

The 920 is running fine at 4.5 (325*14) on a 1.375Vcore, with good temps(38/43).

I had to go to NY for a funeral, so I didn't have much time to play with it. When I get back I will try to get to my goal of 4.76Ghz (340*14). I am guessing that will be a Vcore of around 1.39-1.4
