3dmark06 not a valid gaming benchmark?

Hexus has posted an editorial on how they feel about Futuremark's newest benchmark. Pretty interesting article from someone who use to be part of the "process."

Read the editorial here.

I had personally questioned 3DMark06 when the OpenGL standard was lacking.

It is unfair to compare cards with SM2 vs cards with SM3 because they are not benched equally. For example a score from a x850xt may differ a big range from the score from a 6800ultra. I think 3DMARK05 is way better in terms of equality (lol I sound like a historian).

It also shows the 7800GTX 256 beating the X1800XT when the X1800XT beats the 7800GTX 256 in almost every game.
Very nice!

No point in running 06 IMHO. It's crap..and it makes your computer seem so crappy unless its like an fx60 phase or cascade cooled to 4 ghz running dual gtx's. Blah, Most of us don't have that, and we like seeing big numbers! Bring on the 3dmark 05

IMO too much emphasis is put on synthetic bechmarks like 3DMark in general and not enough on actual gaming performance. Agreed, it's a convenient comparison between systems, but far too much emphasis is placed on CPU and Ram speed that just doesn't translate into actual gaming performance, under normal circumstances. I'll only ever look at real gaming benchmarks now when deciding on a GFX card, new CPU, Ram etc.

I have to agree with you... I think the best benchmarks are the one's that are used in real world applications, such as the game benchies. These are the only real one's I pay attention to, because if I'm buying a new GFX, CPU, Ram, etc. I want to see what it's going to do with the real thing. Not some synthetic test that I can't really measure real world performance just some number score.

Meh, I don;t like trusting synthetic graphics benchies either. All the numbers show that i should have subpar graphics performance, but i can run COD2 at full settings and FEAR at a very respectible quality at roughly 60-75 frames per second. You probably wouldn;t expect that from a 6600GT system would ya?
