2x GTX 285 vs GTX 480

I can get

2x GTX 285 for $370

or

GTX 480 for $380.

what do I get? The GTX 285s would probably be better for folding, yes? And its my understanding that they're also faster?

The GTX 480 is more up to date and it's probably better as the card hasn't matured yet with folding and it's bound to be epic when it does.

EDIT:
I offered advice thinking you already had a GTX 285.... but now
since you are starting from scratch, I am not so sure anymore

If the SLi setup performs significantly better then the GTX, maybe go that route but if you can get a GTX 480 for $380, I guess my vote goes that way.

i'd get the 480. its pretty much the same as 2x 285s in sli. I just made the same jump you are thinking of. It was a good choice.

No it isn't; two 285's are going to be quite a bit more powerful than a 480.

The GTX480 trades blows with the GTX295, and 285 SLI is a bit faster than the 480. However they will be really close, and a single 480 will create less heat and use less power and support DX11. I would definitely get the 480 over 285 SLI at this point.

Not true. 285 SLI is just slightly faster than a 295, and the 480 trades blows with the 295 (this is based on initial reviews with the first drivers, probably faster now).

I just went from 2 x GTX 285's in SLI to a single GTX 480 and I notice a performance jump.


I had so many problems with my two GTX 285's so I sold them and got the GTX 480 and I don't regret it at all.

They're roughly the same, with the GTX 285's being a little faster...but the 480 will give you a more consistent experience(Higher minimum frame rate).

The GTX 480 has the highest minimum frame rate of any card, including the 5970. Plus, you have the option of getting a second one later on when they're cheaper.

I'm noticing a lot of problems too, sli is fun and pretty but just not easy haha.
i got mine for folding but a well clocked 480 can get the same PPD as two 285s.

I vouche for the 480 as i went for the 285s.Im not disappointed, but im not satisfied either.

Id go for the GTX 480 because if u ever needed more performance, you could just add another one...PLus, 1 GTX 480 consumes less power, produces less heat, less noise....there may be a small performance difference but new drivers will probly narrow them down....
