I recently got a laptop that has this cpu in it I was wondering if it would be safe to overclock with stock heatsticks and cooling and the information is as follows

CPU: AMD Athon 64 2650e 1.6GHz Single Core
Motherboard: Acer Nile
Memory: DDR2 3GB

and the CPU is on socket AM2(940)

It depends on what laptop you have, almost all have different cooling systems. I'd get the program Speedfan and monitor your stock temps for a while then over clock a tiny bit at a time and watch the temps for a while every time you do it. You want to keep the CPU temp under 60 Celsius.

I have an acer 5515 aspire it was free so I can't complain to much but I'l keep an eye on my stock temps first like you said and for future refrence what program would you recommend to over clock the cpu with?

looked at my temps and the temp of my cpu understress is 53c

I use my mobo's BIOS. Gigabyte has an over clocking program built in. I'd check your BIOS for the option to over clock first then make a new thread about CPU over clocking utilities, I have never used a program for it, sorry. You will want to look for something that lets you increase either your CPU clock or FSB.

A laptop on Socket AM2? Hmm, that's unusual. I wouldn't recommend you overclock a laptop but considering the low clock-speed you might be able to manage up to 2Ghz on that thing. Try AMD Overdrive.

yeah I can run desktop cpu's in my laptop as long as they are low wattage cpu's and I can buy a dual core for it and throw it in with a bios update and it will work just fine.

AMD Overdrive won't work on the laptop. And it's not a good idea at all to overclock your laptop. The higher performance laptops with over the top cooling can handle it and most include some sore of tuning software, but the Acer aspire was not designed to handle the added temp of overclocking. I suppose you could get a couple hundred mhz out of it with a cooling pad but you won't notice a significant difference. Want to really add some snap to it?? SSD.
