Intel Demonstrates Woodcrest Against AMD; Less Power, More Performance - Page 2

Hype, hype, hype, I always wait for the benchies... I could claim I made a processor in my garage that beats both Intel and AMD chips but without proof. It means :turd:

Yes but that is against the old AMD 280, wait for the AM2 280 and also that uses only single channel memory, intel up to its old tricks? Fanbiys...pshhh...I'll wait for real world benches and testing.

Well those of you waiting for benches what say you now? Someone's already posted them on this site and Conroe (Woodcrest and Merom are the same architecture as well) is handily slapping down an FX60 overclocked to 2.8! (The Conroe is at stock 2.66) but like I've said before, AMDs AM2 launch offerings, Windsor and Orleans, are ONLY slight revisions to the San Diego and Toledo cores with support for the new socket, DDR2 memory and some other slight changes while Conroe is a generation ahead technically so of course its gonna beat an FX60 handily, it will also beat FX62 by quite a bit BUT when AMD does release its next generation cores it should be more than up to the task of showing Conroe a thing or two

Why say its going ot beat it hands down? The clock speeds are not yet determined, and who says AM2 isnt just going to pull something out? Maybe AMD was waiting for Intel to blab their mouth on the processor performance to adjust as necessary? AMD is a pretty silent company.

I was just saying that the first generation AM2 processors, based on the Windsor and Orleans cores were not the ones to compare to Conroe, but like I said when AMD does bring out its next generation offering you can bet its gonna be faster than Conroe.

Also what clockspeeds aren't determined? Conroe will launch with 2.4GHz and 2.66GHz CPUs with 4MB of cache and 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz with 2MB of cache, and AMDs AM2 Athlon X2s will go from 3800+ up to 5000+ at launch with clock speeds from 2.0GHz to 2.6GHz and either 2x512kB or 2x1MB L2 caches.....AMD should also have the FX62 ready at launch which is going to be 2.8GHz and 2x1MB cache while Intel's Conroe Extreme Edition is going to most likely be a 3.33GHz 4MB cache CPU with a 1333FSB (all AM2 CPUs have a 1333MHz bus, the mainstream Conroes will have a 1066 FSB I think)

One thing I found interesting was that Intel's conroe CPUs will have 2x2MB of L2 cache while AMDs AM2 X2s will have either 2x512KB or 2x1MB L2 cache BUT their single core Orleans cores only come with 512KB L2 (no 1MB models) and will not go up in clock speed as high as the X2s will so it seems as though AMD really wants its flagships to be their X2 (and FX) lines and wants to really reinforce the idea that the single cores are really more for budget comupters from here on out. I bet the cache sizes will grow with later revisions to the cores and I think this was a move to cut production costs to compete with the 65nm Presler/Cedar Mill CPUs that are out now and of course Conroe and Merom/Woodcrest because last I heard Windsor and Orleans are 90nm, but they are pretty impressive 90nm parts as far as their heat output goes to say the least!

Thats a pretty interesting post..I really cant wait to see som benchies between the new INTEL'S and AMD'S
