A TEC in my Mini-Fridge?!

post #1 of 24

So I was bored today and decided to take my mini-fridge apart to see what makes it get cold, and I found THIS! I believe this is a TEC. It has a crappy heatsink behind it and it is attached to the inside of the fridge. You can see in the picture that I had to replace the fan that was on it with a Thermaltake 92mm because the one it came with was shot. That's what you get for $20 I guess. Anyways, back to the point, does anybody think this could be useful for overclocking, like say if I sandwiched this between my Big Typhoon and my P4? The dimensions are 1.50" x 1.50" x .125". Would it burn out, or just not drop temps enough to make it worth the hassle? It is pretty crappy-looking after all. Feedback appreciated in advance.

maybe a few degreez. But if the tec overheats it becomes an insulator and your CPU will just keep getting hotter until thermal throttling steps in.

EDIT:::

If you plug it up backwards it will super heat your CPU. So dont mess that up.

Seems like it would work if it will fit. I would try it without a doubt.

After looking at it, I found a code written on it: TEC1-12705. I Googled it and found THIS!
I might try it out on a test rig I have at a friends house, the heatsink that was on the fridge never got that hot, but this will be a P4 Prescott, not 6 cans of warm pop.

EDIT:

The hot side is the side with the code on it.

lol im making a mini fridge for a project in college.

If anything, I wouldn't use that on your CPU, it won't be powerfull enough.
Try your GPU

It is not even worth a try sorry. You need a TEC that can handle a hell of a lot more than that little one. 226 Watt is pretty much an absolute minimum for todays CPU's. All that baby pelt will do is make the cpu hotter, it will overheat probably straight away and just crash. Dont try it.

Cool, thanks for the help, I figured it would be too small. I wasn't expecting it to be of much help.
