Newb needing advice on cpu purchase.

Thread Starter
Ok, I ve got 500 to spend on a cpu/mobo, and I ve been researching and reading, and I thought that a athlon64 x2 4200 manchester was my best bet for the money, but now I seeing something about the opterons and them being dual core? I know I want dual core, and I want to get the most for my money, so what processor is my best bet? Either? Neither? I play alot of games and do alot of vid encoding. Also, I ve got an agp 6800ultra, so the mobo has to have agp. Thanks for any help/explanations of differences!

I dont think the x2 4200 is the way to go. If you want to go dual core Id say get the x2 3800 and overclock it past x2 4200 speeds. You also could go the Opteron route with a 165 dual core opty. You'll sacrifice initial clock speed, but the added cache makes up for it. There arent many great agp boards for the 939 socket, so you might want to sell your current agp card for the pci-e version.

Most likely yes, but price/performance you'd be better off getting the x2 3800 IMO. With the $500 you'd be better off taking a hit on the processor, so to say, and go with a better motherboard. Most games as of now dont take advantage of the multi-core technology, but they will soon enough. For the mobo I would recommend the DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLi-DR with the AMD x2 3800 all for about $484.
