Pentium D Overclock Suggestions

Thread Starter
Hey, as you can see, I have a Pentium D 830 (3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB) and just like everyone else, I don't feel like reading FAQ's that beat around the bush and never directly mention my particular CPU and it's voltages/FSB/etc...

Anyways, I had my internet turned off here at my school, I was ovrclocking out of boredom.

Here are some specific specs: CPU: 800MHz FSB, 15x multiplier, with 14x stepping, 3.0GHz stock, stable at 3.7GHz, the highest I've reached is 3.83GHz with 1.3v~1.4v (no voltage mods).

memory: you can see in system specs: it's rated to run at 1GHz, but the mobo only supports 800MHz.

Mobo: i955X chipset, 1066/900/533 FSB, DDR2 800/667/533

Cooling: Custom kit, very nice cooling, so upping the voltage is possible.

Any suggestions on different places I should up the voltage? I've mainly been tinkering with the CPU frequency from 200MHz ~ 250MHz stable, and locking the PCI-e at 100 and 33.33.

Any help/advice would be appeaciated. I'm aiming for 4GHz, so... weee!

The guides actually do really help.

Even among the same CPU sometimes there are variable, you just have to go slow and see what works on yours. You shouldn't raise Vcore until you get a loss of stabibility.

Was the system stable at 3.83? Dual Prime95s run for 6 hours?

If so, why'd you stop?

Increase the FSB by 5-10mhz at a time and check to be sure it's stable. If not, I would loosen your ram timings a bit first before pumping more Vcore, that's just me.

Nah, it wasn't stable at 8.38GHz, but I could try loosening the timings... hmm... thanks for the advise so far.

Edit: 3.83, lol!

Run Memtest on the memory to see how far it'll go, set the divider to 1:1 and your FSB multi to 4 or 5 to limit your CPU speed and start going up and see how fast your RAM will go, let the test loop for 2 runs before going higher and make sure it passes without errors...You then have your max RAM speed.

That mb will do 1000mhz with that ram all day long...mine does.
Set the fsb to 250 and mem to 833. That will get you 3.75 with headroom for the ram. Set vcore to 1.5 and vdimm to 2.2. Mem timings of 5-4-4-9. Use AIBooster to bump fsb up a couple at a time and test stability. I run @ 250fsb(4.5) and 1000mhz mem 24/7 with full load between 45 and 50c depending on ambient temps.
Hope this helps...

If you don't learn how to test your components individually, you'll never learn how to setup your system for maximum performance. Nobody on this entire forum can simply "suggest" a maximum overclock that will work with your system. Every stick of ram, every cpu,etc is different and will have different performance. I know you're in a rush and want to take the easy way out, but you'll never reach your optimum system settings by asking for values to try. Sorry to bring bad news, but it's the truth. Learn what you're doing You'll be rewarded in the end

I have a Pentium D 3.0ghz 2M / L2 proc with a Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal motherboard.

I also have the VapoChill EX II chassis with the R22 cooling.

I haven't decided on what memory I should get. Any suggestions?

I am also curious if anyone can give me a heads up on overclocking this cpu.

This case will freeze the CPU to -35

I was wondering if I could get 4.5+ghz out of this CPU.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

Mike
