Thanks so much for all your replies. You've convinced me to give the opteron 165 a whirl. And you can bet I'll be back here at the beginning of next week as I try to tweak the settings just right!

On a final note, keep in mind that hard drives fail. If you're writing a thesis or anything important regarding your school work, always have a backup of the data. An easy and cheap solution is to buy a cheap hard drive (20 gig 5400 rpm) and back up your important docs to it daily. If one hard drive fails, you have it saved on another drive. (or create a Raid 1 array,but that's more expensive because you have to get a larger drive)

or just buy a cheap usb drive witha decent amount of space just to hold school papers
