Reboot

Thread Starter
Hey guys finally got my computer. I started it and idle temp was about 40-45 degrees. To test this machine I ran Guild Wars on High Graphics 4x antialising and everything else on high. 20 min into the game my computer reboots. I suspect this would be because the chip got too hot. I've started Guild Wars back up and turned on some more fans and the water cooler to medium and right now its running 50-54C is this ok or should I be worried?

I'd verify to make sure it's because of overheating..

Because P4's only reboot well over a 100°C, not to mention you would have noticed Thermal Throttling having started (your comp would slow down a lot)

Try keeping your Prescott's temps under 60°C; 65° at most.

Did you overclock your CPU or GPU, or is everything at stock?

IMO, that temp looks normal for idle (in 40s). My CPU at stock stays around low 40, too.

Oh, I see that he has w/c... should be lower... Hmph.

Like hyde said, below 60*C and limit at 65*C is preferred.

The Bigwater SE does not cool the processor down all that much and a Prescott EE with all that cache and a 40C idle is pretty normal. I had a Prescott 2.4 @ 3.4 with a Bigwater and it idled (after being on for about an hour) easily at 40C and still hit 50C load temps.

X1900XT's are very hot. Now I wonder at the airflow in that case. With water cooling one loses the usually large fan on the CPU and the board/gpu could well be getting very hot. X1900's easily make 80C when playing and if the case inside is hot they can easily be the state of a reboot event.

I would def check the temps at your GPU. It's more likely your graphics card was the cause of the reboot rather then the processor.
As for your temps they seem about right for your cpu. I've got a Pent D EE and my idle temps are right around 38-40C with full load temps of 46-48C with a custom wc setup so they seem fine for a bigwater. AS stated above just make sure your temps are surpassing 65C but I would use 60C just to be safe.

And Welcome to Overclock.net!!!

Ok I.. well actually my dad figured out that the guy who made the computer for me forgot to take off the panel covering the gpu airvent therefore my gpu was not getting any air im pretty upset but after uncovering the vent it is running fine at 79- 81 and is not rebooting or freezing anymore. my cpu is running stable at 4.2 ghz, yet since i thought it was the cpu should I be able to overclock it a little more now knowing that the gpu was the problem or is 4.2 ghz good?

I'm glad you got everything worked out, that's a pretty simple mistake to make...LoL.
If you're willing I would push your CPU as far as you want to take it. Just don't forget the guidelines for temps and you should be fine.
Also just keep checking to make sure your systems stable by running Prime95(which you can find at http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2414.exe) or some other testing app.
