SATA II device on a SATA III port !! is it possible ?

Thread Starter
Hi,

a friend of mine had just called me and asked me a question about AMD .... he is going to buy a MSI motherboard called 890FXA-GD70 which pocess just one SATA II port and the remaining 6 are SATA III ports.

he is going to install more than one internal storage device, i guess 3 HDD's and a DVD combo, so the sum is 4 devices all SATA II.

he is asking if he can connect the STAT II devices on the available SATA III ports, i have no idea about that, any help ?

Thanks.

You can use the same cables and everything. The entire shebang is backwards compatible. And like the above poster said, it won't make any difference with conventional drives not in some extreme raid array.

Still works. At most all you would have to do is a move a jumper. On some motherboards back when SATA II was just out you had to move a jumper on the SATA II HDD to run on a SATA I port.

I had an ineresting experience with this...

I've had a SATA II HDD plugged into a SATA III port for a while. No problems for a while. Then today, my mobo prompted me with an error. Said my HDD was "Status Bad" and would no longer recognize it. I tried unplugging and replugging several times, tried my other SATA III port. Nothin'...

So, since I technically never looked into the question, I figured maybe I was wrong about the whole SATA II in a SATA III port thing. So I went ahead an put it in a SATA II port. Worked fine, without any trouble.

Now, I know I could be wrong, but I do feel very confident that my HDD isn't toast. It's not very old, has only been used as storage (no constant data access), and is not an unreliable brand. Could a compatibility issue possibly exist here?
