First time overclocker, looking for some Help!

Thread Starter
Hey i was thinking of overclocking my CPU a bit just to slightly increase performance. My computer is fairly old (bought it in 2002) and im planning on getting a new gaming Comp. in the near future but for now i would like to boost this one to satisfy my needs. My specs are:

Intel P4 Northwood 2.4GHz
Intel D845GLLY Mobo and chipset
SpecTek 512MB SDRAM at 133.3MHz (PC133)

according to CPU-Z, my FBS : DRAM is 3:4. Does that mean anything?

Anything you guys could help me with would be great.

PS: im also a little self-conscience when it comes to cooling issue's so i don't want my CPU running hot.

Yea unfortunatly intel board are not ocable. If your gonna upgrade your board since your comp is starting to get older like mine i would just do a complete switch. Dont spend anymore money on that rig. change sockets from 478 to 775 and get pci-e etc "all the new jazz" if you willing to hang on to that one for awhile the new conoroe's are comming out in about 5-6+ months dont know exact date although im sure someone here does. Or if your gonna buy a board for intel cpu now. Get a mobo that will support the conoroe as its gonna be worth it in the long run.

that is if your going intel. If your primary use is games, I hate to say this as an intel guy but go amd for games if you do buy now and thats what ur using your computer for you cant argue with the stats amd has proven itself better then intel for games. That is untill get gets a taste of the conroe's

BTW i give this information as what i would do its entierly your choice. And im not trying to start amd vs intel war here im just proud of intel for finally pulling its head out of its ass and doing what its capable of insted of going for the most herts. Although i will be quite interested to see what amd's response to the conroe will be.

That is a good processor to overclock.
With a good socket 478 motherboard you probably can get over 3ghz if not more.
It's a great choice to start with.

But you will have to spend some $$ to get a good HSF (Heatsink and fan), a better PSU (Power Supply) and probably a video card to go with the new motherboard. Get quality stuff and it can go in your next next computer after this build.
