Workstation for my dad.

Thread Starter
My dad wants me to build him a workstation for his work. He wants processing power, speed, low noise, and reliability. He didn't want fancy video or sound, just enough to run 1600 x 1200 on his 20.1" Samsung LCD. He wanted it no more than $1000. Here's what I put together.
Opteron 165 - $325
Asus A8N-VM - $64.99
G.Skill DDR400 1GB - $71.99
Thermaltake Big Typhoon - $54.99
Artic Silver 5 - $5.99
Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 250GB SATA + Sunbeam NUUO 550W - $158.50 Combo
eVGA 6600 (PCIe) - $99
Lian Li PC-61 - $110
NEC Floppy - $6.99
LiteOn DVD-RW - $39.99

Sub Total - $940.43
Shipping - $59.27
Total - $999.70

The OS is all taken care of. Any suggestions? I think he'll like it.

Edit: I do plan on OCing it a little bit, nothing major, up to opty 175 speeds, maybe a little bit higher.

Big Typhoons cost $50 usually and you don't need that card for 1600x1200 - almost any video card now will go up to that resolution. It's a good card, though. Only other thing is that floppys usually aren't nessecary nowdays.

wow, doesn't get much closer to 1,000 dollars, eh? Anyway, i'd get the case and the Arctic Silver 5 at another computer store. I'd also get 2GB of cheapo ram and ditch the BT. If this is a rock solid workstation, there's no reason to sacrifice or take the chance of (a lack of) stability. Also, get a more rock-solid AGP board with an nVidia 5700. Mabye you can upgrade to a 7 series for Vista, but IMO 2GB is a necessity.

2 GB is not a neccesity, and this thing's not going to be running Vista. And, he wants good quiet cooling, and the BT fits the bill. And from what I read, the PCIe boards are more stable for s939.
And even though floppy drives are not very often required, they're good to have. I have had many problems that could have been easily solved with a floppy.

okay, it was just my suggestion.

I didn't. I've got the same RAM in my rig, it's great stuff. G.Skill is amazing, they have great RAM and low prices.

Sorry about the double post, my dad just gave the OK, we're ordering soon. He's used his Gateway notebook with a 1.5Ghz Dothan and 512MB RAM for the past year and a half, so this will be a big step up for him. He thinks his notebook is getting a bit frail, since it has been used ALOT every day for the past year and a half (it's not a very sturdy thing, either, one of those lightweight 5 pound ones).
