Memory Question

Thread Starter
I am building a new machine that I want to try to overclock. I have 4GB of Kingston PC3200 HyperX Memory in Dual Channel mode installed. I noticed that the BIOS is only reading 3GB of Ram. The specs on the motherboard show a max amount of 4GB. I left one dual channel set in the computer and it reads 2.1GB. I put the other set in and it reads 2.1GB. I tried both sets of memory banks and they say the same thing. As soon as I put both sets of memory in it only shows 3GB. I called Gigabyte and asked them. They said this was normal and the memory is not lost it is being used by the system. Can some one explain this in detail to me? What part of the system is using 1GB of the ram???? I asked them if I would pull 1GB out of the system if it would read 2.xGB of ram instead of 3GB. They said no it will read 3GB and if I put 4Gb in it will read 3.xxGB of ram. The BIOS is reporting 3.09GB with 4GB installed????????????

Thanks for any help...

have you updated the BIOS? I have heard often of similar issues... and I am not sure exactly why it will only show 3Gb. I think the main issue to look at is how much RAM windows is reporting. It looks like you have win x64 so 4gb should not be an issue. doublecheck that windows is reporting you have 4gb. Also run cpuz and post some screenshots about what it says about your system and RAM.
Just a note on OC'ing... you will have better luck ocing with only 2gb (4 sticks of RAM will stress your memory controller more than 2sticks) so you may want to think about only using 2gb unless you do something that you need the extra 2gb for.

I have updated the BIOS when i first got the board. The BIOS, Windows, benchmark programs and Memtest all report 3GB. I'll see if i can get some screen shots and post. I take it this is NOT normal like gigabyte says it is???
