Your 2.4 doesnt even come close to a P4 at even 3.6. The only reason you think this is because sandra is a synthetic benchmark relying on clocks only. The SiSoft Sandra arithmetic benchmark cannot be used to compare cpus because it is way too narrow. You take a P4 at 3.8 and a sempron at 2.4 and go play BF2, see what happens.

It has NO voltage options. And you also need to take into account that Sisoft "canned" benchmarks have absolutely no relevance in the real world.

Try this. Take that 2.4 Sempron and a stopwatch against the 3.8 Intel and test the load times of FarCry. Rip a DVD and convert it to DivX. Compare the times.

This will tell you so much more than benchmarking via Sisoft.

Don't forget though we are talking about socket 478 pentiums here. They do fewer operations per clock than the sempron does. Besides, he had crappy PC2700 in his old system. His new should serve him better. It is 64-bit, after all.

well I have my Sempron 3100+ sitting stable @2.55GHz (300x8.5) on an Asus K8N mobo and I'm pretty happy with how mine runs.

we can all pull ourselves over which would be faster but I guess at the end of the day it's a matter of what he thinks compared to his old set up.

for a cheap cpu the Sempron rips, I have it pumped with voltage (1.650V) and it still runs cool with stock air cooling.

If someone wants a decent inexpensive system the Sempron is a good choice for those of us that dont want to blow our wads on a processor $100+ more expensive (as most are...here)

The only reason I didn't get a sempron is basically because for around 50 dollars more you can get a chip that has twice the cache. I think your old p4 rig, depending on the stepping, could be overclocked very high and also have a hell of a lot more cache. ... I've heard of 2.8a/e's *forgot which it exactly was* can hit like 3.8-4.2 ghz easily.

However, You've bought and amd so welcome to the darkside. 7/10

Dude, you've never tried anything better so how would you know? How can you say they're better than a 3.8ghz Intel when you dont have that cpu to compare to? That sempron 2.4ghz isnt as good as you think, but you just dont know because you've never had something better.

Ok, at 2.0 ghz it beats my dads Pentium 4 Northwood at 3.0 in Super PI and other benchmarks. I would think this trend would continue on similar P4's. And I didnt say it was better than a 3.8. I simply said it TIED a 3.8 in Sandra. And I think your the one not understanding by saying semprons and "good" cant be put into the same sentence when talking about performance. There isnt that great of a difference between Athlon's with 512kb of cache and Semprons with 256kb. Maybe a second or so in Super PI, maybe 2-5 fps.

The northwood has 512kb and its a prebuilt rig, of course it will be outperformed. The prescott has 1MB at the lowest so its got FOUR times the cache of your sempron, not twice as much. My prescott and many others have 2MB cache which is eight times more, big difference.
