Memory: Speed VS Latency?

Hey all,

I'm trying to figure out whether it is better to shell cash out on high speed RAM or go for a lower latency, and also which is preferable when overclocking.

Does anyone have a good link to some benchmark tests somewhere? i trawled google for a while and came up with Jack.

I know to benchmark when overclocking to find the optimum, but when it comes to buying new sticks, i need to know which is preferable.

I would go with latency, and I would recommend Memtest86+ for testing it.

Since you have an AMD chip i would go low latency. If it were intel i would say higher speed

This. AMD CPUs generally have a hard time coping with higher clock frequencies. Their IMC is more limiting in that regard compared to Intel's CPUs.

1800 7-7-7, 1600 6-6-6, something like that.

Considering Phenom's IMC only officially supports up to DDR3-1333, I found it wiser to shop for lowest latency at that speed at spec voltage (1.5v).

Here is a good comparison done over at the OCZ technology forum on a MSI 790FX-GD70. It compares faster speed to lower speed with tighter timings.

I have had absolutely no issues running my ram as high as 1650, so I would suggest some good 1600 speed ram with low latencies. That way if it fails to run that fast you can always downclock it to 1333. Maybe these...

Those sticks can go even lower than CL7 with more volts
