I am using Windows 7 with an asus board.

Which F key to I use to get into the advanced boot menu for safe mode? It's not F8, that brings up the boot menu.

Try pressing F8, and then choosing your OS drive and pressing F8 right after again

Yea, or wait for POST to finish but before Windows starts to boot, and press F8. That is the button for Safe Mode, but inconveniently also the button for the boot menu.

Tried that, the problem is it won't boot. Right after it finishes post, it goes to a black screen. I press F8 and it asks which one I want to boot from, I press my main drive, then nothing.

It can be slightly confusing when F8 is also the BIOS boot menu but it is F8. So press F8 a lot until you can choose which drive to boot from, then get ready to whack F8 a lot immediately after you choose and you'll get the Windows boot menu with safe mode etc etc.

That only happened to me when my windows os was failed beyond repair. Is anything wrong with your OS or are you just trying to get to that menu for other reasons?

most of the mobo's I've used you have to press F5 repeatedly till it comes up with the OS boot option, then from there you press F8 to switch across to the advanced boot menu.
