Converting a DVD into a computer video file?

Thread Starter
I want to turn a skateboard DVD that my friend made into a small, SINGLE video file such as maybe .avi or .mpeg that I can send to friends. I'd like to be able to actually edit the video and take little clips from it (such as my own trick that I have in the video ). I have no experience dealing with all these .VOB files and TS_AUDIO/VIDEO whatever crap lol. Any help?

Basically, a DVD and video file conversion and/or compression program.
