Just one Big Grip/Question with Ubuntu10

Thread Starter
Why in the hell can a tiny little OS by the name of SLAX have audio output without any problems when Ubuntu10 can't even make getting audio drivers a simple thing(IE the sudo commands no longer work from 9 or older)? What is the reason that a build made by one guy has this and a build made by a company does not?

By the way, if you do know some super secret easy way of getting audio to work in Ubuntu10 that would be so appreciated as I'm going to only get 3 hrs of sleep tonight after spending the entire day looking for a way.

Hey bro, what hardware you got? erm... i see battery on your sig, but not sure if you talking about a PC or laptop XD

I have only been able to see ubuntu 10 on live USB (not had time to install and test since im happy with mint atm XD) and the audio works fine automatically for my laptop and my desktop.

cause it forces you to use pulse audio, where slax prolly uses alsa. you can't removed pulse audio, but you can force ubuntu to use alsa.

http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/2009...eaudio-at-bay/

i will try this guide in 10.04 before i nuke it, i will let you know if this works.

If that doesn't work, try getting rid of alsa and using OSS instead. It's what I do and I don't wanna go back.

You could get rid of pulse audio

Code:
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
and see if the system changes to that other one... erm was it OSS... can remember, but only try this last resort. I think there was a way you could select what audio module to use.

Cant fully remember sorry XD

alright that did not work, but you could try this, right click the task pane, where the menu is at, go to edit menus, in the menus section, go to system/preferences, and in the right hand pane, check multimedia systems selector. close it.

then go to system/preferences/multimedia systems selector, and change the plugins to alsa, and choose the device, default should work, but if it doesn't, play around with a few to see which one it is if there are multiple. this has worked in the past.

if you do that command, it wants to get rid of the ubuntu desktop as well, which i believe is the gnome package, i will double check.

okay removed, no ill effects, other than i don't have volume control atm, let me see if i can find one for alsa.

alright, found the alsa mixer, you have to install it,

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

it will be then in applications/sound&video/gnome alsa mixer,

i don't think their is a applet any longer in ubuntu for alsa sound, if their is, i couldn't find one.

Wow. Glad I posted here because you guys are a lot faster than the official forums. Yeah, I think I got rid of Pulse Audio(thought it was a program ). But I have gnome ALSA already and still nothing. Should I go through and do the terminal purge of Pulse just to make sure it's gone? Oh and don't ask me about what audio card or device this G50 has because in windows when I had this issue it was given one name and maker yet in the Ubuntu threads it's listed as NDA or HDA intel.

Funny thing, ALSA only recognizes my NVIDIA HDMI as the sound card. ? What the heck?

This brings up a question to me though; why can it detect and get drivers for my GPU and yet not do the same for audio or touchpads for that matter?
