Note: I have a friend who bought a laptop that did not come with a recovery disk with windows pre-installed. It did however have the option to create a Windows recovery disk for backup. Unfortunately his son decided to do a format and reinstall before he made the disk (bummer). He called HP (I believe) with all his info and the COA and they happily mailed him a recovery disk for $25.

Yes, you should have been given a CD I believe although as has been mentioned, there is a new method to place the CD on a hidden partition and through a restart and key press you can initiate the restore procedure and this may be the case.

Ya I've heard about that on some of the prebuilt systems, I think it was a Sony system I saw that on, in a different forum. Kind of a stupid way to do it actually IMO. If your hdd fails, then your totally screwed once you're out of the warranty period. What, are they trying to save money on CD's? Or is it they want you to be screwed if your hdd goes out after warranty? Hoping you'll buy a new hdd and pay for new windows through them? I don't know. For me, just another reason to avoid prebuilt systems like the plague. To me, anything like that, where you have a problem with a prebuilt that you would not have on a build your own system, is just one more of many reasons why prebuilts suck.

My uncles friend just recently bought a new dell system, not a low end one either. He was so proud and thought he had the shiznit. Then he wanted to add his old hdd, and then I had to explain to him some downfalls of his dell. ONE ide port, already taken by his two cd/dvd drives. Two sata ports already taken by the raid0 that came with it. I mean you gotta be kidding me, ZERO upgradeability, *** is wrong with you dell? He had to buy a controller card just to add ONE hdd to his rig, I had to laugh. Prebuilt = yuk.

No man. What would they be sued for? If your under warranty, they'd give you a new hdd, so they'll honor the contract you signed with them by buying it. It's just that they won't come out and say "oh btw, before you buy this, know that we cut as many corners as we can, so just pray your hdd doesn't go out after your warranty." It's like alot of business practice, sly, underhanded, some of it should be illegal but it's not. They prey on those who don't know better, or don't know how to build one themselves. See they want you to be stuck in this position-- Should I buy a new preloaded hdd from them? Cause the alternative is to buy a new hdd and a windows disc, and it's more expensive that way. They're hoping to get that hdd sale themselves, plus they saved a little on making a recovery cd. Dang I wish more people saw through their bs, it's the only way they wouldn't get away with it, to me they're blood sucking vampires.

IMO all computer companies should have taken the lesson from apple, when they were so proprietary that they cut their own throats. They handed over all the business to the pc platform, cause they couldn't seem to get their heads outta their a$$es quickly enough. Being ultra proprietary backfires, they think it will force people to buy from them, and it does. But at the same time, anyone who knows better is turned off by it, and they lose sales, alot of them. After all this time, I guess they still don't get it. Fortunately for them, there's alot of people out there who don't know this, and that's the only reason they are able to continue screwing the consumer. If more people were savy, they'd change those systems real quick to be better, cause noone would buy them.

This is why I just bought the program, so Id never have to deal with this crap again. 1 Disc works for all 5 of my systems. However in the event that I build another PC Ill need another copy just for the COA.
