Burnt VRM's, What is the cause?

Thread Starter
I recieved a compaq C712NR from my cousins girlfriend, who said there was smoke pouring out of it. I took it apart, and found a burnt VRM right underneath the CPU socket. So I bought another motherboard for it off of E-bay and got it put together, went to boot it up and got nothing but a white screen. So I took it apart again and saw that a VRM in the same cluster as before had burned. Because it is so close to the CPU socket I am beginning to think that it is the CPU, either that or the battery/ AC adapter is bad.

Any ideas? I'll get pictures up soon.

EDIT: Pics, First one is the replacement board, second is the original.

Sorry about the blurriness, my camera has no macro.

I don't know what you mean, this is the laptop section, hence motherboards cannot be replaced with any old motherboard you may have sitting around, hence they need to be the same model.

If it is blowing up like that, send it in for repair or get a new laptop?

Can't send it in for repair, its not mine, got it from my cousins girlfriend, and it's out of warranty. I don't even need a laptop yet, as I will be getting one for college anyway. I was hoping to fix this one an either sell it or just keep it around as a backup.
